Crusading Realism This is a timely and insightful analysis of America's new foreign policy. Dr. Lamont Colucci, an internationally known professor of politics and government at Ripon College and a former State Department diplomat, offers a close-up, behind-the-scenes view of how global terrorism and the events of September 11th, 2001 shifted U.S. foreign policy to a more aggressive, clearly defined, demanding, and idealistic position. Professor Colucci's detailed analysis of world events is enhanced by exclusive interviews with CIA Director Jim Woolsey, former Chairman of the U.S. Defense Policy Board Richard Perle, Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz, noted journalist and commentator Charles Krauthammer, and a number of other leading government officials and commentators. Colucci does what other policymakers, pundits, and academics have failed to do—he explains the reasons behind the change in American foreign policy and why this change has only occurred four times in U.S. history. Now it is more important than ever for citizens to understand the real reasons for the invasion of Iraq.

The scope of his analysis is divided into four phases: the genesis of the Bush Doctrine from 2001-2003, initial developments, further evolution, and subsequent maturation. The book's centerpiece concept of Crusading Realism is put forward as an intellectual framework of the Doctrine, which is central to understanding the geopolitical realities of today and tomorrow.

Colucci's writing will intrigue serious foreign policy buffs as well as the casual reader. Readers will come away with a fuller understanding of: why the U.S. engaged in the war on terror, how American core values shape American national security, why the U.S. invaded Iraq and the philosophical foundations of President Bush's foreign policy.
