What is St. Martin House?

St. Martin House is a faith-based community organization dedicated to serving the needs of the neighborhood in which it is located and working for social justice.

History of St. Martin House

St. Martin House was formed as "Blessed Martin House" in 1946 under the direction of the late Bishop Jerome L. Hastrich. Blessed Martin House was formed as a center for blacks and whites interested in interracial work. In 1952 the agency moved to its current location on Beld Street and housed a religion program as well as recreation and education programs.

The House is named after St. Martin de Porres, an interracial Dominican brother who served the needy in Lima, Peru. St. Martin was canonized in 1962, and at that time the organization name changed to Saint Martin House.

In December of 2002, St. Martin House moved into the new Catholic Multicultural Center of the Diocese of Madison at the same location as the original building.
