The Salvation Army of Dane County

2002 Annual Report

The Salvation Army in Dane County
8/03/2002
Matthew Mayeshiba

The theme of The Salvation Army of Dane County this past year has been "Giving Hope." Thousands and thousands of persons turn to us each year and the common deficit in their lives is a lack of hope. I hear it in the questions - "Is there a place for me and my children in your shelter?" ... "Can I have something to eat?" ... "Can I play on your basketball team?" ... "Can we get some toys and food for Christmas?" The Salvation Army has been able to say "YES" over 50,000 times in the past year to questions just like these to persons of every race, creed, origin and sexual orientation. We have said "Yes" at our two sites in Madison and now at our newest facility, Holly House, a transitional shelter for homeless single women. We have worked cooperatively with local government, private agencies, businesses, churches and the United Way of Dane County, and have been assisted by more than 4,000 volunteers. And increasingly we are saying "Yes" through our volunteers in the outlying communities of Dane County, providing essential services in 19 different communities like Oregon, Waunakee, Stoughton, DeForest, Verona, Cambridge, Black Earth, Deerfield, Dane, McFarland and even Middleton (through our partnership with Middleton Outreach Ministries).

Did we ever say "NO?" Unfortunately, too often. Have mistakes been made by The Salvation Army? Many times. This Annual Report tells of our attempts at "Giving Hope" in the name of Jesus Christ, and because of the generous support of donors and friends such as you. Hope seems to be in short supply these days. Thanks to you, today, some of your neighbors have a bit more hope than before they came to The Salvation Army.

Blessings from God to You,

Major Paul Moore

Adopt-a-Kettle Campaign

During the 2001 holiday season, The Dane County Salvation Army launched its first concerted effort to enlist the support of local businesses in its annual bell ringing campaign. Either by matching funds or by staffing kettles many area companies, such as MG & E which contributed $25,000 to our programs, substantially helped our annual holiday season fund-raiser. In the last year, these contributions have helped us maintain the services which define The Salvation Army. If you or your company are interested in helping to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate of this community, call 250-2BEL or visit our website at http://www.ringbells.org.

Family Volunteers of the Year

This year the Tom and Lisa Bauer family was honored by the United Way of Dane County with the Presentation of the Community Volunteer Family Award for their years of service to The Salvation Army. Tom began volunteering at the soup kitchen once a month almost five years ago, and soon committed himself to helping the homeless every Saturday night. Now the entire family including Tom, Lisa, and their two sons Tommy,11, and Nash, 9, volunteer every weekend, not only at the soup kitchen, but also at the Dane County Fair, Christmas Castle and many other events. The Salvation Army congratulates the Bauer Family for their recognition, and sincerely thanks them for all that they have done to improve the lives of the people of Dane County.

Interpreters Dance Team

The Interpreters Dance Team has been a part of the Madison Salvation Army program for the last two and a half years. Originally created as the extension of an existing program in Janesville, this group of twelve girls ages 8-18 has performed their program of miming and interpretive dance at a variety of community functions during the last year. Eager to perform for a wider audience, the Interpreters and their leader, Katie Casey, welcome your calls at 250-2258.

The Salvation Army Disaster Services

Since its introduction to Dane County, The Salvation Army Disaster Services has become an important element of many of Southern Wisconsin’s major events. This last year was no exception, with the Disaster Canteen serving countless people food and beverages in situations as varied as the Dane Lumber and Home Center Fire and the National Mayor’s Conference. In addition to the Disaster Services’ local work, it has helped the healing process of several international incidents including the September 11th tragedy, to which the Dane County Salvation Army not only sent money contributions in excess of $100,000 but also sent several volunteers to assist in the on site clean-up efforts in New York City. Next year, The Salvation Army is hoping to enlist more volunteers to help expand its round-the-clock efforts to aid the people of this community.
