Friends of Monona Bay

Monitor Water Clarity Friends of Monona Bay monitors water clarity in Monona Bay as part of the DNR's Self-Help Citizen Lake Monitoring program. Volunteers monitor conditions every other week throughout the spring and summer.
FOMB "water detectives" measure water clarity, using the Secchi Disk method. The black and white disk is lowered into the water until it can no longer be seen. The depth of the disk is marked at this point, as an indicator of water quality.
Volunteers record their findings with the DNR and receive a year end report. The test findings are compared to satellite data.
Monitoring helps us learn more about the seasonal cycles of Monona Bay. Over time, the data will provide important information about algae and sediment levels.
