Employers and employees both benefit financially and develop closer ties to the community. Find out specifics for your present situation from Metro Transit by contacting Mick Rusch.
Madison Area Bus Advocates Alliance Write Newsletter Articles or Letters to the Editor
Keep the issue of good bus service at the forefront by writing letters to the editor or articles for your neighborhood newsletter. Can you provide tips to neighbors based on your experience? Are there simple improvements that would make riding easier? What might induce more people to use the bus? What do you want and how can we get there?
Madison Area Bus Advocates Alliance Contact Government Officials
Contact your Alder, Mayor, County Supervisor, County Executive, State Representatives, Governor, Federal Representatives and President. Tell them that good bus service is critical and ask them to take leadership in promoting mass transit at the city, county, state and/or federal level.
Madison Area Bus Advocates Alliance Share Your Research
Good transportation policy depends on informed decision making. You can help improve the Metro bus system by researching one or more topics and preparing a summary of your findings. The summary can, in turn, become a fact sheet or web page. Here are some suggested topics.
Madison Area Bus Advocates Alliance Attend Meetings and Testify
Attend meetings on transportation and land use to meet people, listen and learn. Make sure transportation is always a consideration and promote mass transit where and when it is not now available. Whenever there is a proposed fare change, service change, or route restructure, know what those changes are and testify on how the changes would affect you, your neighbors and your community. The quality of our service depends on your feedback.

Madison Area Cagebird Association of Wisconsin Adopt a Highway Volunteers Needed! (Currently on hold)
Currently, this opportunity is on hold, need 6 more volunteers!

Are you looking for ways to exercise, to spring into shape, and to have fun while helping your club and community? Then MACAW is looking for you! Volunteers are needed to help with the "Adopt a Highway" project to help keep our adopted highway clean. Our section of road runs from Gammon Rd to Whitney Way on the eastbound side of Hwy 12. Look for our sign and honk if you see us out there working! Please contact MACAW1@charter.net for more information.

Madison Area Cagebird Association of Wisconsin Bird Ambassadors Needed (On Hold)
The new aviary is now open everyday until 4PM. If you haven't been there yet, this is a must see if you are in Madison.

Our zoo had asked our club if we would be interested in helping them monitor the traffic coming through the aviary, and help answer visitor questions. It was a great opportunity. We solicited volunteers, but couldn't get enough people who would be willing to spend a few hours over the weekends to help. We keep this opportunity up here in the event that there is a spike in interest to do this, at which time we will go to the zoo and offer to help them any way we can. But first, we need a lot of volunteers!

To learn more about this exciting opportunity, or to be added to our list of ambassador volunteers, please contact MACAW1@charter.net.

Madison Area Cagebird Association of Wisconsin Bird Toy Maker
One thing we do, especially around the holidays, is make toys for the birds that are in avian rescues or at the humane society. No experience necessary, as you learn on the job!

We usually bring in some snacks, maybe a movie to watch, and chit chat as we make fun toys for the birds. Come join us and help make a disadvantaged bird's life just a little happier.

Madison Area Cagebird Association of Wisconsin MACAW TV Volunteers Needed (On Hold)
MACAW TV, nominated in 2004 for a WYOU Academy Award, is a program MACAW put together that aired weekdays on WYOU TV to help educate the community on bird care and avian welfare issues.

We produced, edited and directed the TV show and it was a lot of fun. The downside to this was it took a lot of time filming and editing the programs. But if there is interest in doing this again, I would be happy to work with you to bring MACAW TV back.

Opportunities for program producers, editors, script writers and assistants exist if there is interest. Whether you want to be in pictures, or help behind the scenes, MACAW TV has something for everyone.

Please contact MACAW1@charter.net for more information.

Thank you!

Hello Writers!
Spring into your writing! Set aside time each day to follow your joy. Once a week, reward yourself for your progress; take a walk by the lakes, stroll through a friends' garden, or buy yourself a new pen and more paper! I was thrilled to hear how inspiring two Writergrrls found the recent UW Writers' Institute. One found an agent who she now has sent 50 pages of her manuscript! You go grrl! You know who you are!

What if you found a a summer writers' workshop that gave you a fresh start? See our related links page in the left margin for a list and websites!

Hello Writers,
The first cool weather of fall is here. Time to nestle into your favorite chair and write! I was very impressed by our writers' recent work we heard at last week's Garden Party Reading. Courageous, mystical, spellbinding would be my summary. The bees on the blooming Rose of Sharon tree, and the bats swooping in after sunset also added to the ambiance. Thanks to our readers for a memorable event. Write on!

Hello Writers,
I love the silence of a blizzard. The snow dampens the sound of traffic; all the city sounds. All I hear is the productive metallic slide of shoveling. Take your snow days, ignore your to do list, and pour your soul onto a page.

Hello Writers,
It's February next week and my characters haven't a thing to wear! Just kidding of course, but try this experiment: This month read a best seller, the kind authors pump out in less than six months, and a tried and true classic. Both kinds can teach characterization. The best sellers often spray paint the outline of a character in a rather bold, effective way; the classic may make a more lasting portrait. Notice *how* they do it.

Hello Writers,
Do you keep a journal? A diary? Jot down quotes or ideas?
My intuition tells me you do.
Do you write every day? Every week? Every once in a while?
Is there a time of day you could steal 15 minutes to write a page?
If 15 minutes made all the difference, what could an hour do?
Come see, at Room of One's Own,
Rebecca
Madison Writergrrls **June/July 2008 Facilitator's Note
Hello Writers!
Keeping cool as the summer flies by? Escaping to libraries and coffee shops to work on your writing? I went South, to the chilliest air conditioning in the country!

I have just returned from a fabulous writers' conference in Austin, Texas. The Texas Writers' League attracted around 200 writers and 25 agents to their conference last weekend. I had the opportunity to pitch my novel, Spoke, to six agents within 48 hours! Three were interested in receiving pages! I received very valuable feedback and learned to refer to my book an "Adult Trade Novel" rather than Historical Fiction, since it is a literary novel set only 40 years in the past (rather than more than 100 which would qualify it as "historical").

I hope you will make plans to get out there and share your work in a class or at a conference this summer. Check our "Related Links" page for upcoming summer writing events!

Madison Writergrrls **March 2008 Facilitator's Note
Hello Writers,
March, the only month that moonlights as an action verb. As your letters march down the page, what is their rhythm? Do they gallop, charge, or saunter? This month, challenge yourself to new phrasings. If you tend to be succinct, try longer sentences to slow passages down. Or, if you tend toward paragraphs comprised of a single sentence, pare them down into several sentences to speed it up. Above all, allot time for writing whenever you can.

Last month, three hearty Wisconsin Writergrrls and I met for our very snowy February meeting. We worked on humorous love poems, from an inanimate object to an inanimate object, inspired by a local poet Marilyn Annucci. Today the snow is melting! (could it be all that passion between the turtleneck and cardigan?) Two sunny days in a row promise warm days ahead. Take some time to soak in some solar power and see the creativity you generate.

We look forward to hearing your latest work at our next meeting, March 24, 2 pm, at Room of One's Own.

Hello Writers,

I'm here to say the UW Writing Conference was excellent. I highly recommend it! I'm still on a mountain top high in my writing. One workshop I learned a great deal from was about the editing process. This summer, we'll talk about how to better our feedback for more inspired revisions.

Get your calendars ready and set a goal for what you will accomplish by our next meeting (May 26). See you with your completed poem, chapter or story at the end of the month.

Madison Writergrrls Past Year Facilitator Notes: 2006
November: The Madison Writergrrls is celebrating its third year! Thank you to all the wonderful women writers who participate in our group. I feel lucky to have met you. Writergrrls range in age from 18 to 91. Several are poets, a couple write page-turner memoirs, two are travel writers, one has a fresh twist on a coming-of-age novel... Members also write historical, and foodie fiction (I might figure in there somewhere). How about you? Have a story to share? Great, see you at Room of One's Own 11/25, 2 pm. Meanwhile, check out the Día de los Muertos" writing prompt. Write on! -Rebecca

Stop the hustle bustle a moment, sit in a sunny window, and sneak in some time to write. Dream a dream for the new year. What could your writing be? What new worlds could you create? See the New YearsÂ’ Writing Goals page for ideas. Happy celebrating! -Rebecca

Mobility Training and Independent Living Program, Inc. Job Club News
Not only do we want our clients to find employment that is customized to their abilities, we also want them to find employment that allows them opportunities to pursue their vocational aspirations. So that they may achieve these goals, our Job Coaches, Job Placement Specialist and clients meet on a bi-weekly basis for Job Club. The purpose of Job Club is twofold: (1) to facilitate the development of new skills that may be useful in the workplace and (2) to help our clients successfully secure employment within their communities. For the past several months, our clients and Job Placement Specialist have been producing picture portfolios that illustrate clientsÂ’ unique abilities and practicing interview skills through role playing. They have also been busy updating resumes, writing cover letters and working on basic computer skills. This October has been very exciting with a new Job Club beginning in Sun Prairie! All members meet at the Sun Prairie Library on Tuesday afternoons.
Mobility Training and Independent Living Program, Inc. Ron Schultz Celebrates a Milestone!
Ron Schultz celebrated his 10th Anniversary of employment this past September at Copp’s Food Center on Whitney Way. Ron started at Copp’s in September 1998 as a grocery bagger. He has thrived in this position. Ron uses his friendly, outgoing personality to provide excellent customer relations while bagging groceries in an efficient, professional manner. Bagging groceries continues to be Ron’s main duty at Copp’s, but he also works on the “Clean Team”, does parcel pick-up and collects carts from the parking lot. Congratulations Ron on ten awesome years…keep up the good work!
Monona Public Library Volunteer for the Monona Public Library
The Library depends on volunteers to help keep the library looking nice. Help us get our materials on back on the shelves in a timely manner! Call Erick at 608-222-6127 if you can volunteer time on fairly regular basis to help us. Even an hour a week can help!

Mount Horeb Public Library Adopt a shelf!
Adopt-a-shelf! Help us keep the collection organized! If you like traveling, the 910’s is the place for you; if gardening is your passion, maintain the 635’s; or if you are a music aficionado, the CDs are calling. Once you have chosen the section to adopt, care for that area relies on you. (Perhaps change to “you are in charge of that area). A limited commitment of once or twice a month for 30 minutes is all that is needed!
Mount Horeb Public Library Book Sleuths
Book Sleuths are needed on either Wednesday or Friday mornings for a two-hour commitment. If your kids are grown and your husbandÂ’s retired, you no longer need to know where keys, socks, books, and wallets are. Put your tracking skills to use at the library instead! A Book Sleuth hunts down items on our shelves and sends them to other libraries as holds. (Is this part necessary?)
Mount Horeb Public Library Busy Box Wrangler!
Be a Busy Box Wrangler! Busy Boxes are fun to play with at home; they also provide loads of fun for those who count the pieces when the boxes come back to the library! The popularity of Busy Boxes leaves Amy Kalchik, Youth Services Assistant, hidden behind a tower of plastic tubs. She is looking for a once-a-week, 30 minute commitment from those who enjoy counting.
Mount Olive Lutheran Church Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN)
