Wisconsin State Journal :: DAYBREAK :: D4

PEOPLE LIKE YOU EACH WEEK FOCUSES ON A SMALL GROUP THAT HELPS BUILD COMMUNITY FOR ITS MEMBERS, FURTHER ENRICHING PUBLIC LIFE IN THE MADISON AREA. WE WILL PROFILE A GROUP, HOW IT STARTED, WHAT ITS GOALS AND MEMBERSHIP ARE, HOW OFTEN IT MEETS, ETC., PROVIDING READERS WITH IDEAS ON HOW TO BEGIN THEIR OWN GROUPS, OR PERHAPS, IF POSSIBLE, JOIN THOSE THAT SHARE THEIR INTERESTS.

Who's New in Madison * What it is: A support and social networking group for people new to Madison within the past two years. Currently all members are women, most over age 40.

* Objectives: To help newcomers become familiar with the many things our community has to offer and to promote friendships through a variety of social activities. Serves as a lifeline for people who do not yet have connections in their new community.

* How it began: Formed in 1935 by women of the YWCA to bring new residents of Madison together and build lasting friendships.

* Description of meetings/activities: Offers many small activity groups that connect people to others with similar interests. Includes: book clubs, Mah Jong club, the Taste and Tell lunch group, an antique study group, investment groups, a bicycling group, golf and tennis clubs, bridge clubs, the Singles/Solos group, the Couples Gourmet dinning group, Not Just Wine and Cheese cocktail parties and much more. Monthly luncheons for all club members feature a program with a speaker. New Member Coffees allow prospective members to meet with current members to learn more about the group.

* In a nutshell: "It's a great support system for people new to Madison, it helps people figure out what's what and how do you find whatever; it helps them settle in and find their place in the community." --Jennifer Allen, publicity

* Membership numbers: nearly 400.

* Meeting time and place: Luncheon meetings on the 2nd Thursday of each month, location varies.

* Membership fee: $20.
