Activities

WHS and its membership conducts a variety of activities: WHS provides educational herpetological programs at public events, at which members display their own reptiles and amphibians and offer the public a chance to get acquainted with them. Field trips to view and photograph herps in the wild are sometimes also conducted. Opportunities to assist professional herpetologists in their research are also sometimes available. Most herp research is conducted by various state university and educational institution personnel, and the WI DNR. If you are interested in initiating a research project, or participating in one that is in progress, contact the following for additional information:

Most herp research conducted in WI is under the oversight of the WI DNR Bureau of Endangered Resources. Contact Robert Hay, WI DNR Herpetologist, for additional information:
Robert.Hay@dnr.state.wi.us

Milwaukee Public Museum also conducts herp research. Contact Vertebrate Division Curator Robert Henderson for additional information:
henderson@mpm.edu

UW-Stevens Point Herpetology Society is also active in herp research. They can be contacted through their website on the WHS Related Links Page. For local projects, contact the Zoology Departments of local public and private universities in your areas to investigate research opportunities.

Membership in WHS is open to anyone interested in Reptiles and Amphibians: To become a member, send an Email stating your name and city or county, to :
wireptileshows@hotmail.com
and ask to be put on the WHS membership list. WHS membership is basically participation-based. Anyone with an interest in any aspect of herpetology is welcome to participate in any of our public events. Primarily we just convene at various public events and exhibit herptiles, provided by the participating members. All of our public events are posted on the WHS website Public Events Page. If you would like to assist with any of these activities, send an email to Events Coordinator Ed Stone at: wireptileshows@hotmail.com. If you have your own animals that you would like to exhibit, send Ed a list of species you have available to exhibit. Generally we are given limited space and want to avoid duplication of species, so that we can exhibit the greatest species variety in what ever space we get. We also adhere to generally accepted herpetological society standards for exhibiting. If you breed and sell any type of herps, or are set up to do educational presentations on your own, let Ed know what you have or what you can do and if we get requests, we may be able to refer potential customers to you. Other than that, that is about all we do as an organization. At this time we have no formal organizational structure or officers. Currently we only have a few active members, and another dozen or so that show up at our events to hang out and have fun. We are all busy people with full time jobs, families, and herp collections, and dont have time for administrative duties like office-holding in organizations, so we dont collect dues or publish a newsletter, or hold regular meetings. We just party with reptiles at various public events. We communicate by email and through this website, so its up to each individual to check the website periodically for event updates and to participate at their own level. Just let Ed know ahead of time which events you expect to attend, and what you would like to bring so he can coordinate things. Everyone is also welcome to suggest, or to arrange with other events or organizations, WHS participation with a herp display and Ed will put notices on the website requesting members to participate. If you have any ideas or suggestions contact Ed.

Reptiles and amphibians have never been more popular as pets, but many of the types offered by pet stores often are unsuitable for a variety of reasons. If you are thinking about getting a herptile as a pet, expert advice is available through our organizations members. Many of our members breed reptiles and are good sources of healthy, captive-bred and acclimated animals.
