20/20 Report on Animal Thefts by SPCA's
An investigative report on animal thefts by various local SPCA's that reveal government collusion and corruption, and the politics of legalized theft. This is why you should not let any public officials on your property without a warrant and why you should not answer questions or talk to them without an attorney present, except to say "GET OFF OF MY PROPERTY RIGHT NOW OR I AM CALLING THE SHERIFF AND PRESSING TRESSPASS CHARGES!!!".

2004 CDC Reptile-Associated Salmonellosis Article
Everyone who uses reptiles for public presentations and allows public contact needs to read this article. It makes clear a number of issues on Reptile-Associated Salmonellosis (RAS) that havent been as well expressed or addressed in previous articles on this subject. This study shows that due to the current high levels of popularity of reptiles, cases of RAS have reached the same levels comparable to the turtle associated salmonellosis cases of 3 decades ago before FDA banned baby turtles (~74,000 Cases/year). Based on these findings, the article concludes that LEGAL RESTRICTIONS ON THE SALE OF REPTILES ARE WARRANTED to prevent RAS. This article was published by CDC , so is considered authoratative and will be taken seriously by state agencies, and legislators. We can expect a new onslaught of anti-herp/exotics legislation supported by these findings. I strongly advise anyone exhibiting reptiles to either prohibit contact or employ preventative measures.

These guidelines were issued as a result of a recent outbreak of E.coli 0157 uremic syndrome that occurred from a petting zoo at a festival.

It's official: There are no safe pets. Everthing can kill you. Eating these things probably is what gives your snakes Salmonella.

CDC's Dog-Bite Statistics
With 5 million dog bites in the US annually, of which a dozen result in fatalities, and many more result in permanent disfiguring and disabling injuries, one wonders why politicians bother with exotic pet bans. This is good ammo.

Reptiles get a lot of bad press over Salmonellosis, but look at all of the diseases you can get from your dog or cat!

Chicago Herpetological Society
Herpetological societys exist in every state. Because of its proximity to WI, many WHS members also join CHS and participate in it's activities. This is one of the largest herpetological organizations in the world, with over 800 members. It's numerous events and activities offers something for everyone.

Coulee Region Herpetological Society
A new organization in LaCrosse Co. formed in 2004 in response to a proposed exotic pet ban which was defeated primarily due to the efforts of this club.

Pet Animal Welfare Statute (PAWS) Alert !
This law, currently in congress, modifies the Federal Animal Welfare Act to regulate home hobby breeders and mandates USDA home inspections. These changes appear to apply only to mammals, but this legal analysis shows how it can be construed to apply to birds and herps as well. Write to your representatives in D.C. and tell them to oppose these bills, and to oppose any bills that mandate microchipping of pets, and tell them to also cut funding for USDA.

PETA's Exotic Pets Page
This is worth looking at and exploring the links. Its hard to argue about the big cats, bears, etc, but this is where legislators and politicians get the information they use to justify reptile and exotic pet bans. Send for the "Exotic Pet Ban Kit" to find out how they do it.

Pit Bulls: The Whole Story
Dog attack info on this site is not in anyway meant to imply that we dislike dogs or are opposed to their ownership. As this powerful statement shows, the problem is never the animal, its always the owner. Our position is that animal bans unfairly penalize the majority of responsible owners, when it is really the irresponsible owners that should be prosecuted for their crimes, negligence and irresponsibility. Property Rights; A Primer

Reptile-Associated Salmonellosis Death from Blood Donation
If you own reptiles and donate blood, inform them. Any septic condition can be passed in donated blood. This case happened to be reptile-associated, but this could happen, and probably already has happened, with any other zoonotic disease from any other type of animal. One case is not an epidemic.

Timbergreen Farms and Forestry
This forestry and farm business deserves everyones congratulations, support and business for their generous and reasonable attitudes and treatment of some of Wisconsins most spectacular and endangered herpetofauna. In case you missed the article about them earlier this year in the WSJ outdoors page, this link shows that reasonable people can safely live in close proximity to C. horridus. If you have need of the types of products and services this farm offers, please patronize Timbergreen.

U.W. Stevens Point Herpetology Society
A great site by a great student organization contributing greatly to herpetological research, education, and conservation. Lots of great links, including one to the DNR's 2000 herp regulations.

WI Bird and Game Breeders Association
For those with broader interests, this is the largest exotics/wildlife organization in the state. They do lots of shows and swaps all over the state. For those with snakes, the swaps are good places to find inexpensive feeders.

WI Captive Wildlife Act (Ch. 169) Health Regs.
WI-DATCP health certification requirements to administer Ch. 169, in effect as of October 2004. Overall this is sound legislation that should get everyones support, and will benefit hobbyists and local breeders by making them more competitive with the commercial pet trade. In a nutshell, this means that ALL animals, including all herps, are required to have a veterinary health certificate before being brought into WI.

Scroll Down to Ch. 169 on left side of screen, if necessary.

WI DATCP Health Certification Requirements
Scroll down to ATCP 11 under Animal Health. Herps entering WI from out of state are now included in this and require a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection from the state of origin.

WI DNR Regulations on Native Reptiles and Amphibians

WI Hall of Shame (A)
After at least 4 years these legislators are still managing to play the game of Justice Delayed is Justice Denied, even though they are each charged with as many as up to 20 felonies each, of political graft and bribery. These are the same people that restrict your right to own, breed, and sell animals with their intrusive licensing bills. Some things are hard to swallow. Where are people like Chai Vang when you really need them?

WI Hall of Shame (B)
Examples of the kind of prosecutors we have in our state. Would you want to face these people if you were charged with an animal violation?

Wisconsin Herpetology Home Page
WHS was formed at the Milwaukee Public Museum in 1973 by MPM staff herpetologists. MPM remains the center of herpetological research in Wisconsin and this website is a good way to keep informed on their projects. As a sort of "Homecoming" celebration, WHS, in conjunction with the Chicago Herpetological Society, convenes to MPM annually for one weekend in March for MPM's annual "Snake Days", for which WHS and CHS set up a large (100+ species) live reptile and amphibian display open to the public as a fundraiser for MPM.
