What is MEP?
The Task Force on Money, Education, and Prisons (MEP)is a non-profit organization created to increase public awareness of serious problems in the Criminal Justice and Prison Systems in Wisconsin. HistoryThe Task Force on Money, Education and Prisons (MEP) began as a conference planning group in 1998. Joann Griffin of Project Bootstrap was concerned about the impact of the prison system on minority communities and on the State's education budget. Conferences were held in Middleton (Feb. 1999) and Milwaukee (Dec. 1999). The success of the conferences moved the group to organize as an on-going entity. MEP has sponsored Prisons Awareness Week in the early fall as an annual event beginning in 2001. A conference on Mental Health and the Prison System was held in 2002. Presently, MEP has joined with the UW System in planning for a summit held at UW Oshkosh May 27-28, 2003: "A Summit on Community Justice, People, Prevention and Prisons: Reclaiming Safety for the Public Good".
