Wisconsin Governor's Challenge

School Parent Letter - Fall '06

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Great news! Your child's school will be participating in the third annual Wisconsin Governor's Challenge, special Fall edition, co-sponsored by the Office of Governor Jim Doyle and Trek Bicycle Corporation. The challenge will begin on September 4 and end December 8, 2006.

The purpose of Wisconsin Governor's Challenge, special Fall edition, is to encourage children to enjoy more physical activity throughout the day, both at school and at home. Recognizing the importance of regular physical activity for your children now will promote these healthy behaviors for a lifetime. Parents will benefit, too!

The goal is for students to participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity for five days a week, for six weeks. The 60 minutes does not have to be continuous –15 minute increments of continuous activity counts towards their goal. Students count activities they do in school (e.g., physical education class, recess, team sports) and after school.

Students will total their daily physical activity either on-line or on the paper activity log. If the school decides to have the students use the paper activity log, each log should be signed by the parent/guardian and returned to their teacher when it is complete.

Every participating student that completes the program will be rewarded – by having a great time getting active, by helping to build a habit of regular exercise, and of course by receiving a free certificate and gift.

Get involved! When families promote physical activity, children are more likely to participate. The Wisconsin Governor's Challenge is open to all Wisconsin resident's so you and your child can earn your free certificate and gift together as a family. Encourage your child to participate and join them in fun healthy movement for the whole family!

Sincerely,

(Insert Name of Teacher/Principal)
