Ways for Families to be Active Together for Little or No Money


Ideas for cold weather

  • Make Mom and Dad feel like kids again! Rake the leaves into big piles that everyone can jump and play in

  • Get the family together outside and have each member build a snowman then decorate the snowman to look like another member of your family

  • Go sledding

  • Hit the slopes!

  • Start a snowball fight

  • Make snow angels

  • Everyone in the family dress up for Halloween and go trick-or-treating together

  • Learn and practice yoga together

  • Spread holiday cheer!! Do this by Christmas caroling and trying to hit as many houses as you can in your neighborhood

  • Make your house look festive for the holidays and decorate together!

Ideas for rainy and snowy days

  • Try out an exercise tape together

  • Learn and practice yoga together

  • House work goes twice as fast when you do it together- Design a chore list, split it up among family member and see who can complete their list first

  • Jump in the puddles and play in the rain- It's fun when you can see Mom and Dad acting like a kid again!

Ideas for warm weather

  • Family swim day- Everybody pick a stroke and teach it to the others in the family

  • Can Dad still hop? Find out with a game of hopscotch

  • Challenge Mom to a jump rope contest- First one to stop skipping has to give the other a prize

  • Fly a Kite at the beach- Check out different spots along the shore to find where the wind is best

  • Scour the shore for the perfect shell to make Mom a new necklace with

  • Schedule a time in the evening for a family walk around the neighborhood

  • Pack a picnic lunch and head out for an all day fishing adventure

  • Mountain bike on a local trail

  • Roller blade in the park on a Saturday afternoon

  • Trampolines aren't just for kids- Get Mom and Dad up there to see how they do!

  • Tennis Doubles- try boys vs. girls, parents vs. kids, mix it up however you like!

  • Get your baseball gloves out and play a game of catch in the yard

  • Play a pick-up game of basketball

  • Make Fido part of the family walk- don't forget dogs are family members too!

  • Grab the tent and hit the woods for a family nature excursion

  • Lace up your boots and hit the trail for a hike

  • Ask Mom and Dad to show you the dance moves that were popular in their day and then give them a try yourself

  • Make it a family affair to go to the gym- There will probably be a cost in membership but think of all the health gains you could make together

  • Start a family garden- Give all members a piece of land and let them plant whatever they want. With everyone tending it, see how your family can "grow" together

  • Toss the football around before the big game starts on TV

  • Let Mom or Dad give their best golf tips and then go out together to see how the lessons help improve your game

  • Increase the "strength" of your family- Start a weight training program together

  • How about some boating? Get your canoe in the water and paddle away!
