Welcome to the Wisconsin Historical Society

The Keeper of Wisconsin's Heritage

The Wisconsin Historical Society's headquarters in Madison

Founded in 1846, two years before Wisconsin became the 30th state, the Wisconsin Historical Society ranks among the pre-eminent state historical agencies in the nation. Located in the heart of the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, the Society's library serves as the university's American history library and — with holdings of nearly four million items — comprises the largest collection in the world dedicated exclusively to North American history. It also maintains one of the finest genealogical collections in the United States.

The Society's archives serves as Wisconsin's official records repository and holds numerous collections of national importance, ranging from early American frontier history to late 20th-century social action movements, such as civil rights. Its historical museum on Madison's Capitol Square and its statewide network of 10 historic sites comprise one of the nation's most comprehensive laboratories for the study, appreciation and enjoyment of Midwestern frontier history.

The Society also holds the distinction of being Wisconsin's oldest book publisher. The Society's Press has documented Wisconsin history from the era of exploration to the present day in its definitive, six-volume History of Wisconsin series, and publishes the colorful and popular quarterly Wisconsin Magazine of History, as a benefit to Society members.

Recognizing that history is embodied in more than books, magazines, manuscripts and artifacts, the Society also works vigorously to preserve and protect the state's archaeological and architectural heritage through its historic preservation program. Society staff travel the state to identify, interpret, and preserve ancient and historic places for the benefit of present and future generations — from archaeological and burial sites to shipwrecks and historic buildings and districts.

The Wisconsin Historical Society invites one and all to share in the rich heritage embodied in its collections and to take advantage of its many programs and services aimed at connecting the people of Wisconsin with their past.
