About WHS

As both a state agency and a private membership organization, the Wisconsin Historical Society receives about 60 percent of its funding from the state of Wisconsin. Membership fees, admission fees, gifts, trust funds and grants provide the remaining 40 percent of funding. A 36-member Board of Curators governs the Society, with the Societys membership electing 24 curators. The governor appoints four curators, four come from the state Legislature, and four serve ex-officio. For information on membership in the Wisconsin Historical Society, contact the membership office at (608) 264-6587 or by e-mail.
