About West Madison Little League

Who is eligible to play baseball?

Any youngster between the ages of 8 and 16 (as of April 30) who lives in the Madison West, Madison Memorial or Middleton-Cross Plains public school attendance areas (unless you reside in a community that does not offer its own "Official Little League" program). The player must satisfy both provisions to be eligible. Under National Little League rules, players can participate in only one little league program at a time. If you reside in a community that does not offer its own Little League program, contact us as you may be eligible to particpate in West Madison Little League. However, you will NOT be eligible to participate in the International Little League end-of-season tournament if you live outside our official boundaries.

What about Softball for Girls?

Please refer to the articles on this website about girls softball for more specifics.

What is the baseball playing structure?

Players are placed into leagues primarily based upon age; however, for some leagues, parental requests, player skill level and the number of applicants is considered as well.

Atlantic League: 8 and 9 year olds

Pacific League: 10 year olds

Central League: 11 year olds

Major League: 12 year olds (also several 11's/team)

Badger League: 13 and 14 year olds

Senior League: 14, 15 and 16 year olds (most 14's play in Badger League)

Where are baseball games played?

All games are played at the WMLL diamonds. The diamonds are located at 701 Forward Drive, just north of Schroeder Road and adjacent to the Channel 15 TV tower. The property is made available to the league through the generosity of WMTV.

How can a youngster register to play baseball?

Registration may be done entirely by mail by filling out an application and sending it with the proper fee to the address on the form. If you wish to download an application online, you may do so at "www.wmll.org".

An application deadline is set each season (generally the end of Feb or first of March), so please be sure to submit your application on time or you will be placed on a waiting list. There is a limit on the number of players WMLL can accommodate; therefore, the league operates on a "first come, first served" basis at all age levels, but you are guaranteed a spot if you register before the deadline.

Are players "cut" after registration?

No. Once a youngster's registration is accepted, there are no "cuts". Everyone gets to play on a team.

How are baseball player skill levels evaluated??

A skills evaluation session for 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 year-olds is conducted each spring and is designed to promote parity among the teams by giving coaches an opportunity to see players prior to the league drafts.

Who must attend the skills session and when is it?

The skills session is suggested for all players at the 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12-year-old age levels. Parents of 8 & 9-year olds and players new to WMLL must bring an official birth certificate to the skills session in order for the individual to be allowed to play this season. The sessions help coaches draft more balanced teams to compete against each other. The skills session is set for late March or early April each season at the Memorial High School field house. Check our official website at "www.wmll.org" for the most current schedule for your child's age.

What is the typical schedule for the skills session?

The normal schedule is --- 8, 9 and 10 year olds go thru the skills session between 3:30-5:45 PM. 11 and 12's have their session from 5:30-9:00 PM. Softball session is 6:45-9:00 PM

When do league games begin for baseball?

Season play typically begins in late April or early May and all leagues conclude by mid to late July. Each team plays 2 to 3 games per week (as well as practices, at the coach's discretion). Games are played on weekdays, as well as one day each weekend. Senior League play begins Memorial Day weekend to avoid conflicts with high school baseball. Tournament (allstar) teams are selected for most leagues in late June or early July and these teams begin competition in national and local tournaments following the regular season. You must reside within WMLL boundaries to be eligible for these teams.

Who must complete a registration contract?

Everyone who plans to play in WMLL must fill out a contract. Player applicants from the same family will be placed on the same team if the individuals are in the same league, unless the parents request that they NOT be on the same team. No requests will be honored to place friends and/or neighbors on the same team for baseball (except Fall Ball).

What does it cost to play in West Madison Little League?

The fee for each player is currently $155 for both baseball and softball if you register by 2-8-09($170 after this date). All fees must accompany the registration form with your check as your receipt. Discounts are available for families who have more than two players in our leagues ($105 for each child over two) and scholarships are also available for Title 1 families. These families should check the appropriate areas of the form at the time of registration to take advantage of these provisions.

Who do I call if I have questions about WMLL?
