Writing Manifesto Activity

Inspired by Jack Kerouac

From the 9/27/08 WG Meeting

Below is a list of 17 (of 30) guidelines Jack Kerouac used in his writing. Read them, then generate your own list of 15 – 20 guidelines for your own writing. Begin your list with #17.

  • 1. Scribbled secret notebooks, and wild typewritten pages, for your own joy
  • 2. Respectful (subservient) to everything, open, listening
  • 3. Be in love with your life
  • 4. Something that you feel will find its own form
  • 5. Visionary tics shivering in the chest
  • 6. Entranced fixation dreaming upon object before you
  • 7. Remove literary, grammatical and syntactical inhibition
  • 8. Telling the true story of the world in interior monolog
  • 9. The jewel center of interest is the eye within the eye
  • 10. Write in recollection and amazement for yourself
  • 11. Work from pithy middle eye out, swimming in language sea
  • 12. Struggle to sketch the flow that already exists intact in mind
  • 13. Don't think of words when you stop but to see picture better
  • 14. No fear or shame in the dignity of your experience, language & knowledge
  • 15. Write for the world to read and see your exact pictures of it
  • 16. Composing wild, undisciplined, pure, coming in from under, crazier the better
  • 17. You're a Genius all the time

    "I defined a woman's duty. To look the world in the face with a go-to-hell look in the eyes; to have an idea;
to speak and act in defiance of convention." -Margaret Sanger
