English in Schools

The Zonta Club of Madison has chosen projects that focus on literacy. We are collaborating with the Literacy Network (LN) to provide seminars for Limited English Proficient (LEP) parents with children in the Madison Metropolitan School District.

The seminars (i) improve mothers' and fathers' ability to understand the school system and the role they play in their children's education and (ii) enable LEP parents to be more active in their child's school as measured through teacher/parent contacts.

Zonta's involvement includes both funding and volunteer support. Childcare is essential in order to permit the parents to attend the seminars. This program began September 2002. Back to Table of Contents

Volunteer Recruitment Committee

Another partnering project with the Literacy Network involves helping the Network increase the number of volunteer literacy tutors. In this capacity Zonta assists with production and disbursement of outreach materials and coordinates a speakers' bureau to speak to business, church and other organizations bout volunteer tutoring opportunities. Literacy Network Run/Walk

This annual project for our club involves handling the registration process for the annual Literacy Network Run/Walk (formerly Canterbury Run/Walk) sponsored by local booksellers. The proceeds from this event benefit the Literacy Network's programs. The Run/Walk is the Network's major annual fund raiser. Back to Table of Contents

Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS)

A major focus of Zonta International and therefore of our Club is the worldwide elimination of domestic violence. Our Club partners with DAIS by assisting with fund raising, participating in projects at the local center and making monthly donations to residents at the center. Back to Table of Contents

Our Club also provides assistance to other groups and projects throughout the year such as local public television pledge drives and auctions and the national Adopt-A-Highway program.
