Bloy, Allegra S. "Lee"
MADISON
Allegra S. "Lee" Bloy, died peacefully on the 17th day of March, 2008, age 79, at the HospiceCare Center, Fitchburg. She was born Jan. 15, 1929, in Black Creek, Wis. She was baptized, child of God, as Allegra Shirley Reitz, the daughter of Frieda A. (Brandt) and Herbert M. Reitz. Childhood and days of her youth were lived in Appleton, where she graduated from Appleton West High School in 1947. On Aug. 5, 1950, she married the Rev. Wilmer Bloy, and for 57 years she was his loving wife and helpmate. They began married life in Naperville, Ill., participating in college and seminary life with other married students, while Wil completed his bachelor's degree at North Central College, and then his theology degree at Evangelical Theological Seminary. During that period Lee was an original member and president of SemAnnes, the theological student wives organization. Then followed her ability and work, to make a home for her husband and family in the various parsonages of the churches that her husband served, including Madison, Milwaukee, and Wausau. Along with her husband she retired in 1991 and lived in Sun Prairie, until 2000, when they moved to Oakwood Village East. Throughout all her life she was first of all a caring, concerned, and affectionate mother of four children. Secondly, she patiently endured the burdens, and joyfully shared the blessings of a supportive pastor's spouse, being a confidant and partner extraordinaire to her husband in the ministry of the church. She was always involved behind the scenes in many church activities, including serving as president and leader of a large women's group at the Bay View United Methodist church, Milwaukee. Though her church roots were in the former Evangelische Gemeindschaft Kirche, she had a strong ecumenical belief that God, as known in Christ, was much greater than any one denomination. In addition to the volunteering she did, she worked as a part time library assistant, a sales clerk for Sears Roebuck, and early in life as a floral designer and arranger. This gave her a life-long love and knowledge of flowers and plants that she appreciated throughout her days. She loved singing in choral groups beginning with a church junior choir at age 10, the Chaminade Chorus in Appleton, various church congregation choirs, to even during the last days of her life singing with the Oakwood Village East chapel choir. When not busy with things of the church, sewing and creating things with needle and thread provided her with relaxation. Also, one of life's great pleasures for her was reading historical novels set in England. The many trips she and Wil made to England, exploring cathedrals, parish churches and villages with their long time English friends, was a highlight of many of her summers. Camping trips with her family, bird watching, and later in life attending Elderhostel educational weeks were some of life's gifts that she enjoyed. Behind her often quiet demeanor there was a spark of heaven, perhaps not easily recognized because her life was played out in the most ordinary of settings, her home, her family, as a spouse, and in the church. With understanding she served as care-giver to her two sisters in the later days of their lives. For more than four years she bravely struggled with cancer. Allegra is survived by her husband; two sons, Steve (Laura) Bloy and Jonathan Bloy of Madison; two daughters, Barbara Bloy (and long-time friend, Dennis Anderson) of Minneapolis, Minn. and Christine (Glenn) Davis of Lebanon, Ind.; two grandchildren, Michael (Kirstin) and Sarah Bloy; a great-grandson, Adam; three sisters-in-law, Audrey (Gerald) Elsner of Green Bay, Arlene Krueger of Appleton, and Carol Reitz of Wausau; and by nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Evelyn and Elfrieda; and two brothers, Milburn and Herbert Jr. A memorial service will be held at TREE OF LIFE CHAPEL, Oakwood Village East, 5565 Tancho Drive, Madison, on Monday, March 24, 2008, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Curt Everson and the Rev. Doug Locken officiating. The family will greet friends at 10 a.m. at the TREE OF LIFE CHAPEL, prior to the time of the funeral liturgy. Private burial of cremains will be at a later date at the family plot. Memorials may be given to either Oakwood Village Foundation, the Music Ministry of Bethel Lutheran Church, or Olbrich Botanical Gardens. A special thank you to people who have cared and ministered to us in many ways during these past months: our family physician for more than 15 years, Dr. Gregory Motl; the HospiceCare team and staff; pastor Curt Everson of Bethel Lutheran Church; the chaplains and other staff at Oakwood Village East, plus many caring neighbors at Oakwood and our friends throughout the Madison area.

Broadbent, Bernard W. "Bernie"
MCFARLAND
Bernard W. "Bernie" Broadbent, age 84, of McFarland, passed away on Monday, March 17, 2008, at the VA Hospital in Madison. He was born in Boscobel on June 3, 1923, a son of Earl O. and Lillian (Grimesey) Broadbent. Bernie graduated from Boscobel High School and served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Aug. 5, 1989, he was united in marriage to Patricia Blankenship in McFarland. Bernie grew up on his family farm near Boscobel, with his parents, brothers, and sisters. Together they trapped, hunted, fished, tended the livestock, and farmed the land, which grew to 600 acres. At one time, he and his brothers, Harry and Lyle were on the Boscobel High School boxing team. Bernie was always proud of the fact that he retired from boxing undefeated with a record of 31 wins, 0 losses, and two draws. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, he entered the U.S. Army and completed his training in Anti Aircraft at Fort Sheridan near Chicago, and Camp Davis in North Carolina, before shipping out for England aboard the Queen Mary in December 1943. His unit, the 225th AAA Searchlight Battalion, saw action in England, landed at Omaha Beach at Normandy in France, and fought its way across Europe deep into Germany. At the war's end, the 225th lit the Eiffel Tower with their searchlights in celebration. They had toured the Dachau Concentration Camp near Munich and Hitler's "Eagle's Nest" in the German Alps. He returned to the states in December 1945. He worked for Canada Dry Bottling Company in Madison, where he rose to sales manager, then moved into sales at Metropolitan Liquor, where he became a house expert in wines and spirits, sometimes assisting restaurants with their wine list choices. He was a fixture of the Madison "Supper Club" scene, rarely missing a Friday night at Joe Namio's or Capitol Hill. In later years, he and his wife, Pat became regulars at their favorite, Toby's. He and Pat loved hosting parties, get-togethers, and reunions at their beloved Lake Kegonsa home. There was never a shortage of champagne or food. He loved to discuss his opinions about life, politics, and world events, and was eager to share his views in the letters to the editors columns of the Wisconsin State Journal and Capital Times. Bernie and Pat visited his son, Scott and his family frequently in California and Hawaii, and also regularly traveled to Boston, to visit her son and family. Despite the distance, Bernie and Scott talked by phone at least once a week to discuss the Wisconsin Badgers football and basketball teams, the ebb and flow of the fortunes of the Green Bay Packers, and the news around Madison. They remained very close. Bernie was very proud of his grandson, Luke's athletic and academic achievements. He was a generous, loving husband, and father with a positive perspective on life and a unique sense of humor and self. He was proud of his heritage and extended family. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; son, Scott D. (Roxanne) Broadbent of Maui, Hawaii; grandson, Lucas J. Broadbent; stepson, Benjamin (Nina) Lurie of Boston, Mass.; two step-grandchildren, Eli and Maya Lurie; sister, Kay (Hubert) Bacon; special niece, Betty Harwood, and her children, Jason, Rebecca, Susan, and Elizabeth; and many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his former wife and lifelong friend, Lenice Broadbent Miller; his parents; three brothers, Raymond, Harry, and Lyle Broadbent; two sisters, Betty Molyett and Mary Zinck-Gibbs; a step-son, Adam Lurie; nephew, Robert Broadbent; and nieces, Phyllis Broadbent and Ava Reynolds. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2008, at 11 a.m. at OLSON-HOLZHUTER-CRESS FUNERAL HOME in McFarland, with the Rev. Richard Halom officiating, and Military Rites performed by the Stoughton American Legion Post No. 59 Honor Guard. Private burial will take place at a later date. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bernard's name to Easter Seals or to Disabled American Veterans.

Coughlin, Marion K. (Gotzion)
MADISON
Marion Kathryn "Aunt Mary" (Gotzion) Coughlin, age 98, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Oakwood Village Nursing Home. She was born on Feb. 14, 1910, in Madison, to Frank and Magdalene "Minnie" Gotzion. She attended St. Bernard Parish and grade school, and one year at Madison East High School. When she was 15, her mother passed away and she had to quit school to stay home and help take care of her brothers and sisters. In 1929, she married Walter Snyder and spent a few years living in California, while Wally was in the service. They moved back to Madison and lived on the east side until his death in 1958. Mary worked at Oscar Mayer from 1937 until 1961, when she married the love of her life, Raymond Coughlin. They shared five and a half wonderful years together, until his untimely death in 1967. Aunt Mary, as she was known to all, was a life long member of St. Bernard Parish on Madison's east side. She was one of the founders of the "Over 50 Club" at the Parish and served on many committees for approximately 30 years. She did volunteer work at St. Mary's Hospital for many years. She enjoyed bowling and bowled on several leagues until her late years. She was the "Rock" in the Gotzion family. Although she was never blessed with children of her own, she was a "second mom" to all her nieces and nephews. She stayed in her home until macular degeneration made it necessary for her to move to Chamomile Assisted Living. She loved her room and windows and the staff at the facility. Last summer she had several health issues and had to move to Oakwood Village Nursing Home. Mary is survived by her sister, Frances Borquist; nieces and nephews, Janice (Keith) Bush, Doris (Ted) Payne, Dean (Marion) Gotzion, David Gotzion, Gary (Diane) Gotzion, James (Inga) Gotzion, Richard (Bonnie) Gotzion, Julie Ivanov, Diane (Larry) Steffes, Mary Anne (Gary) Olson, Pat (Joyce) Cass, James (Lynn) Cass, Steve (Nicki) Borquist, Don Widen, and Caroline Zimmerman; and many loving great-nieces and nephews. Marion was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Steve, Joseph, and John Gotzion; and sister, Julie Cass. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2450 Atwood Ave., Madison, on Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at 11 a.m. with Monsignor Michael Hippee presiding. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. The family would like to thank Jeff Shields and all the staff that took such good care of Marion while at Chamomile Assisted Living and the nursing staff at Oakwood Village West and East for their care over the past year.

To Have Succeeded - To laugh often and love much: To win respect of intelligent people, And the affection of children; To earn the approbation of honest critics, And endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty; To find the best in others; To give one's self; To leave the world a little better, Whether by a healthy child, A garden patch, Or redeemed social condition; To have played and laughed with enthusiasm, And sung with exultation; To know even one life has breathed easier, Because you have lived...This is to have succeeded. -Ralph Waldo Emerson
