Clearfield, Gertrude Osborn SPRING GREEN - Gertrude Osborn Clearfield, age 88, died on Thursday, July 28, 2005, of natural causes, at her home in Spring Green, surrounded by family and friends. She was born on Jan. 10, 1917, in Indianapolis, Ind., of Quaker heritage. Her grandfather, Charles Worth Osborn was a major Quaker abolitionist pioneer in the mid-1800s. Gertrude was the daughter of William and Achsah Osborn, and attended Short Ridge High School and Earlham College where she majored in science. Working as a lab technician in Indianapolis, she met her husband, Elvin Clearfield, professional clarinetist, while drawing his blood. After a few dates, they were married four months later. She taught high school science and English for 20 years in Maryland public schools. Following the tradition of her mother, Gertrude became a master quilter and taught classes on the art of quilting at MATC. She loved opera, birds, music, art and literature; and was a voracious reader and avid bridge player. Gertrude is survived by her five children, Martin, Richard, Ronald, Douglas and Susan; a nephew, William Osborn; several great nephews and nieces; 12 grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elvin; and grandson, Joshua. A memorial service is planned for Sunday, July 31, 2005. Call family for details, (608) 588-2173.

Fisher, Ann SALEM, OREGON - Ann Fisher passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 16, 2005, at the age of 99. She was born on June 6, 2006, in Kentland, Ind. As a young woman in the 1920s, she loved living in New Orlean's French Quarter. It was there she met and married Lee Fisher. When Lee became career Army, they traveled a lot, finally settling down in Bigfork, Minn., where Ann owned and operated a diner converted from a railroad car. Later they moved to Wheaton, Minn. At the age of 91, she moved to Salem, Oregon. Ann is survived by her children, Doris Mitchell of Marshall, Donna (Ron) Bishop of Oregon, and Jim (Cheryl) Fisher of Michigan; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Fisher; her son, Neal; and two sisters. A private memorial is being planned for August 5, 2005. We will miss her sense of humor and laughter. Fredrickson, Adolph L. > MOUNT HOREB/ NEW GLARUS - Adolph L. Fredrickson, age 83, of New Glarus, and formerly of Mount Horeb passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison after a brief illness. Adolph was born Dec. 30, 1921, in Verona to Ole "Louis" and Louise (Gassler) Fredrickson. He graduated from Mount Horeb High School in 1939. He married Janice Temby on July 4, 1941, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They were married for 64 years. Adolph served during World War II as a member of the Second Division, 23rd Indian Head Infantry Division. He was wounded in Germany during the Battle of the Bulge and received a Purple Heart. He also received a 3-Star Theater of Operation Citation, a Good Conduct Medal, and a Unit Citation. He was active in many community organizations. Survivors include his wife, Janice; a daughter, Marsha (Larry) Myers of Barneveld; a son, Richard (Paula) Fredrickson of Blanchardville; six grandchildren, Loni Starr, Lori Thielbar, Lisa Schaefer, Lee Myers, Shane Fredrickson and Damon Fredrickson; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandson; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Fredrickson and Alice Thompson; two brothers-in-law, Don Temby and Jack Temby; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Adolph was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons; an infant daughter; a brother, Fredrick Fredrickson; a sister, Marie Garfoot; and a grandson, Lance Myers. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2005, at MOUNT HOREB EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH with the Rev. R. David Keesey-Berg officiating. Hemshrot, Ruth L. BARABOO - Ruth L. Hemshrot, age 78, of Baraboo, went to her eternal home on Wednesday, July 27, 2005, after a brief and beautiful stay at Meadow Ridge Assisted Living. Ruth was born on Dec. 23, 1926, in Baraboo, daughter of Milo and Linda (Thuerer) Simonds. Ruth attended Baraboo High School. She was united in marriage to Arthur Hemshrot Jr. on Feb. 9, 1946, in Baraboo. He preceded her in death on April 11, 2000. Ruth was a nursing assistant at St. Clare Hospital for more than 23 years, before retiring in 1990. Survivors include her five children, Patricia (Larry) Carignan of Baraboo, Steven (Mary) Hemshrot of Shell Lake, Nancy (Mike) Bisch of Baraboo, Ken (Paula) Hemshrot of Rome, N.Y., and Lori (Gary) LaMasney of Baraboo; 12 grandchildren, Mark (Mary) Carignan of Baraboo, Darin (Deb) Carignan of Baraboo, Greg (Kris) Bisch of Portage, Jason (friend Angie) Bisch of Plain, Jarrod (Melissa) Bisch of Rock Springs, Stephanie and Justin Hemshrot of Shell Lake, Jordan, Haley and Logan LaMasney of Baraboo, Keisha and Kenny Hemshrot of Rome, N.Y.; eight great-grandchildren, Casey and Jessie Carignan of Baraboo, Elizabeth and Jacob Carignan of Baraboo, Morgan and Makenna Bisch of Portage, Mason and Becca Bisch of Rock Springs; three sisters, Betty Gardner of San Rosa, Calif., and Joanne Haag and Elaine Hofferkamp, both of Kenosha; sister-in-law, Lynette "Mickey" Simonds of Baraboo; brother-in-law, Bud Ashley of Portage; and many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband, Arthur, she was preceded in death by brothers, Milton, Stewart, Richard and Donald; sisters, Marge Johnson, Marian Ashley, Mildred Wille, Faith Ruhland and Darlene Simonds; and her parents. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2005, at 11 a.m. at ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 624 East St., Baraboo. Pastor Myron Schwanke will officiate. Burial will take place in Walnut Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of service. She was a very caring person and had many special friends, especially Vera Von Haden, Marcy Barnhart, Eugene and Carrie Doro and Mickey Thill. She will always be remembered for making cookies for family and friends at Christmas time. Ruth especially enjoyed her family and always found time for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She gave of herself to so many people and was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was a caregiver who's greatest gift was love. James, Richard P. "Dick" FENNIMORE - Richard P. "Dick" James, age 67, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, as the result of an airplane accident while performing at the EAA Air Show in Oshkosh. He was born on Nov. 16, 1937, the son of Harold and Margaret (Walker) James. He grew up on a dairy farm in the Preston area, and then attended and graduated from the Mining School in Platteville with a degree in mining engineering in 1959. He went to work for Barber Coleman in Rockford, Ill., until 1962 when he returned to Fennimore. Together with his father Harold and brother Harlow they started in heavy and highway construction in the early 1960s. He married Donna Hipenbecker in 1965, and they recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in May. He was past president of the WI Transportation Builders Association and the WI Earth Movers, past master of the Fennimore Masonic Lodge and a member of the Freeport Shriners. He was a founding and current board member of the North American Trainers Association, chairman of the Boscobel Airport Commission and a member of the Fennimore United Methodist Church. He was very patriotic and had a passion for flying. He loved traveling and especially spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Donna of Fennimore; two sons, Peter (Kara) James of Fennimore, and Marcus James of Montfort; two grandchildren, Noah and Isebelle James; his mother, Margaret James of Fennimore; a brother, Harlow (Marcene) James of Fennimore; two sisters, Janis (Lewis) Larson of Springfield, Minn., and Kathy (Richard) Bilof of Wonderlake, Ill.; an aunt, Wilma Walker, and an uncle, William Harp, both of Lancaster; a sister-in-law, Lois Markstrom of Stamford, Conn.; two godchildren, Hilary James of Fox Point, and Randy Markstrom of Stamford, Conn.; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold James, in 1996. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2005, at the FENNIMORE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH with burial in the Prairie Cemetery. The Rev. Duane Andrus will be officiating. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, July 29, 2005, at the FENNIMORE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH and from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church on Saturday. A Masonic service will be held following the visitation at the church on Friday evening. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Dick James's memory.

Kenseth, Helmer Ellsworth CAMBRIDGE - Helmer Ellsworth Kenseth, age 96, of Cambridge, died on Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at his home. Helmer was born in Cambridge on April 16, 1909, son of Martin and Hilda (England) Kenseth. He graduated from Cambridge High School. On Sept. 12, 1936, Helmer married Edith Jarlsberg at Willerup United Methodist Church in Cambridge. Helmer retired in 1983 after 37 years at Melster Candy Company, Cambridge. Helmer and Edith are lifelong members of Willerup United Methodist Church. He enjoyed flying his own airplane, watching stock car races and was a big racing fan. Surviving are his wife, Edith Kenseth, Cambridge; daughter, Gloria (Jack) Zimmerman, Jupiter, Fla.; son, Roy (Nicki) Kenseth, Rockdale; daughter, Pauline (Carl) Nurmi, Cambridge; son, Eldon (Sue) Kenseth, Cambridge; son, Wayne (Chris) Kenseth, Janesville; daughter, Colleen Kenseth, Cambridge; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Kenseth, Cambridge; 12 grandchildren, Jill, Troy, Tim, Matt, Kelley, Steve, Regina, Kevin, Aaron, Jeremy, Dawn and Eric; and 11 great-grandchildren. Helmer was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gary Kenseth; a sister, Elsie Korth; and a brother, Fletcher Kenseth. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 30, 2005, at 1 p.m. at the WILLERUP UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, Cambridge, with the Rev. Brian Cook officiating. Mikkelson, Alvin B. STOUGHTON - Alvin B. Mikkelson, age 98, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at home. He was born in Stoughton on Oct. 17, 1906, and lived in the Stoughton area most of his life. He was a farmer and worked at Stoughton Highway Trailer. He attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison and was a member of ROTC and the sons of Norway. He was married to Martha Nelson in 1942 and they raised 13 children. He is survived by his children, Marilyn (Ronald) Weiland, Karen Showers, Knute, Sonja Moore, Bjarne (Marilyn), Eric, Ingrid (Edward) Showers, Leif (Gloria), Carl, Borghild Eldridge, Haakon (Rachel), Harald and Thor; 31 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers; a sister; a grandson; as well as a brother-in-law and son-in-law. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2005, at 11 a.m. in the OLSON-HOLZHUTER-CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 206 W. Prospect Ave., Stoughton. The Rev. William Mack will officiate. Roethle, Charlene C. MARSHALL - Charlene C. Roethle, age 63, of Marshall, passed away on July 21, 2005, at her home in Marshall. She was born on Feb. 24, 1942, in Hartford, Wis., the daughter of the late Charles and Rose (Krapfle) Pope. She married David Roethle on Sept. 4, 1965, at St. Killians Catholic Church in Hartford. Charlene was employed at the Thompson's Super Value in Marshall for the past 10 years. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marshall. She is survived by her husband, David; two brothers, Charles Pope of Hartford, and James Pope of West Bend, two sisters, June (Vasko) of Hartford, Ruth (Steve) Steiner of Port Orange Fla.; three nephews, Scott Vasko, Nicholas Vasko, and Kyle Steiner; a step-niece, Jennifer Vasko. She was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Louie Vasko. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday July 26, 2005 at ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Marshall, with the Rev. Shurpit, Merle M. MONTELLO - Merle M. Shurpit, age 98, of Montello, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 28,2 005, at home. Merle was born on Aug. 8, 1906, in Barron, the daughter of Fred and Marie Trachsel Krahenbuhl. On Aug. 3, 1928, she married Leon W. Shurpit, in Montello. He preceded her in death on Feb. 12, 1985, after 57 years of marriage. Merle was a dedicated home economics educator, who joined the teaching staffs on Montello, West Salem, and 20 years at Westfield. An accomplished artist, her original acrylic paintings grace countless homes in Wisconsin and throughout the country. Merle was a member of the Wisconsin Retired Educators Association, American Legion Auxillary and the Montello Women's Club. Survivors include her loving daughter, Jo Ann Shurpit of Montello; a cherished sister, Leah (Wesley) (Krahenbuhl) Burleton of Mesa, Ariz.; other relatives and dear friends. Merle was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leon, in 1985; a son, Paul, in 2002; a sister; and four brothers. Stedman, David L. JANESVILLE - David L. Stedman, age 51, of Janesville, died Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at University Hospital, Madison, following a short battle with Leukemia. He was born in Richland Center on Dec. 8, 1953, son of Emmett and Betty (Potter) Stedman. He graduated from LaFarge High School in 1972, and married Patti E. Gabrielson on Sept. 9, 1972, in LaFarge. In 1973, they moved to the Janesville area. David had been employed by Dana Corporation, Beloit Corporation, Stoughton Trailer and the last 14 years at Lear Manufacturing He loved spending time with his three grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Patti; two children, Daniel (Shelley) Stedman and Heather (Jon) Thomas, both of Janesville; three grandchildren, Alexis, Hunter and Miles; mother, Betty (John) Lucas of Ontario; sister, Joanne (Jerry) Ebert of Ontario; two brothers, Richard Stedman of Ontario, and Roger (Lois) Stedman of Sparta; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Douglas and Madalyn Gabrielson of LaFarge; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. Stiklestad, Marian A. POCATELLO, IDAHO/ JANESVILLE - Marian Alice Stiklestad, age 72, of Pocatello, Idaho, formerly of Janesville, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at Ashley Manor, Pocatello, Idaho, following an extended illness. She was born Marian Alice Nadler on Aug. 2, 1932, in Deerfield, a daughter of the late Arthur and Rose (Oviatt) Nadler. Marian was raised in Deerfield and married her soul-mate, Roger on June 24, 1953, in Deerfield. Their best friends, Shirley and Arrie Willie, were their attendants. The couple resided in Janesville. Roger was employed by General Motors. Marian worked at Mercy Hospital and J.C. Penney before having children. She returned to the work force at the Riverview Clinic when their children were in their teens. Marian was an active member of the First Lutheran Church and enjoyed being a Sunday School teacher, Altar Guild member and Bible Study participant. Marian was active in the school P.T.A. Marian enjoyed sewing, knitting and was an avid reader. Marian moved to Pocatello, Idaho, in 1993 to be near her daughter and her family. She spent the last years of her life at Ashley Manor. Her family wishes to express their thanks for the care and compassion the staff at Ashley Manor gave to Marian. She is survived by her daughter, Vicki (Paul) Allen; son, Jon; grandchildren, Anthony, Nathan, Stacey, Kirsten and Jordan; two sisters, Eunice (Edward) and Eileen (Robert); and a brother, Arthur (Susie). She was preceded in death by her parents ; and her husband. Marian, at her request, will make her final trip to Janesville to be buried next to her soul-mate. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 30, 2005, at 1 p.m. at the WHITCOMB-LYNCH-ALBRECT FUNERAL HOME, 15 N. Jackson St., Janesville. Interment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Janesville. The family will meet with friends on Saturday for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Templin, Patricia H. LIME RIDGE - Patricia H. Templin, age 84, of Lime Ridge, died on Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at her home. She is survived by her children, Marjorie (John) Jansen of Milwaukee, Tom (Patty) Templin of Richland Center, and Tim (Joyce) Templin of Reedsburg; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers; four sisters; nieces and nephews; along with other relatives and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial for Patricia Templin will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2005, at ST. BONIFACE CATHOLIC CHURCH in Lime Ridge with Father Lorin Bowens officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery in LaValle. Friends may call on Friday, July 29, 2005, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the FARBER FUNERAL HOME in Reedsburg. A rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Tifft, Phyllis E. MADISON - Phyllis E. Tifft, age 90, passed away at Sunny Hill Healthcare Center on Tuesday, July 26, 2005. She was born on Sept. 5, 1914, in Evansville, to Dale and Anna (DeVoll) Smith. Phyllis graduated from Evansville High School in 1933, and attended two years of music school following her graduation. She played French horn with the Madison City Symphony Orchestra and Band. Phyllis met her future husband through Doc DeHaven Sr., who was also a member of the band. She married E. Frank Tifft on Jan. 6, 1943. Phyllis was a homemaker and volunteer during her lifetime. She was especially proud of her 30 years as a Meriter Capitol (Methodist) and Meriter Park Hospital volunteer, and received several awards for her volunteering. Phyllis was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Madison. Anyone who knew Phyllis, knew of her love for cardinals and French horns, and her collections of anything that had a cardinal or a French horn on it. She is survived by her four children, Gerald "Jerry" (Eileen) Tifft of Fitchburg, Judy Buskager of Waunakee, Jim (Jo) Tifft of Chicago, Ill., and Mary Jo Ingram of Austin, Texas; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away in 1992; her parents; a brother, Stanley Smith; sister, Beatrice Lipke; and two sons-in-law, Loren Buskager and Carl Stringfellow. Funeral services will be held at TRINITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 1123 Vilas Ave., Madison, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2005, with the Rev. Amanda Stein presiding. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the church from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. Weider, Virginia M. PORTAGE - Virginia M. Weider, age 83, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at Columbia Health Care Center in Wyocena. She was born Mary Virginia Christina Pearson, on Dec. 25, 1921, in Galesburg, Ill., the daughter of Swedish immigrants, August and Hilma Pearson. Virginia graduated from Galesburg High School in 1939, where she lived until her father was hired to help build Badger Ordnance in Baraboo. Virginia lived in Madison for a short while after high school, working for a bus company. Later she joined the war effort at Badger Ordnance, working with nitre, used in the making of bullets. After the war, Virginia met Leigh D. Weider Jr. at a dance in Wisconsin Dells. They were united in marriage on April 19, 1947, at the Portage Presbyterian Church. The two ran Weider's Tavern in Portage for more than 30 years. Virginia is survived by a sister, Vye Harvey of Hurst, Texas; three daughters, Nicki Gust of Poynette, Mary Fischer of Portage, and Sally (John) Green of Portage; four grandchildren, Tammy (Brent) Bender of Madison, Gary (Valerie) Gust of Brooks, Tricia Fischer of Madison, and Brandon Fischer (Lisa Slama) of Montello; two great-grandchildren, Lucien Amend of Madison, and Kaylee Fischer of Montello; three step-great-grandchildren, Evan, Taylor and Duncan Waite of Brooks; a niece, Pam (John) Curschmann of Lake Delton; two nephews, Craig (Peggy) Harvey of Houston, Texas, and Chris (Julie) Harvey of Glendale, Ariz., and their children; four brothers-in-law, Wendell Weider of Baraboo, Larry (Jane) Weider of Georgia, Dan (Barbara) Weider of Bristol, and Gary (Joan) Weider of Florida; four sisters-in-law, Kay (David) Hill of Janesville, Sandra (David) Hanson of Illinois, Penny Weider of Madison, and Phyllis Weider of Fond du Lac; a former sister-in-law, Corrine Kelly of Portage; many relatives and friends. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, August and Hilma Pearson; her husband, Leigh; two sons, Jeffrey and David Weider; a brother, Fred Pearson of Lyndon Station; a brother-in-law, Blair Harvey of Hurst, Texas; a nephew, Michael Pearson of Milwaukee; her father- and mother-in-law, Leigh Sr. and Carrie Weider; two sisters-in-law, Nan and Joyce; and a brother-in-law, Tommy. There will be a private inurnment at a later date at Silver Lake Cemetery. The family will schedule a memorial to celebrate Virginia's life at a later date. Memorials may be made to the family. Winn, Barbara W. MADISON - Barbara W. Winn, age 86, died on Friday, July 22, 2005, in a local care center. She was born on June 2, 1919, in Providence, R.I., the daughter of Lester and Edith (Jacobs) Walling. She was married to Richard E. Barrett of Sheboygan, in 1947. They lived in Madison until Richard's death in 1979. Barbara married John W. Winn in 1980. They remained in Madison until John's death in 2000. She was a graduate of Wellesley College with a major in English composition. She was an active member for more than 30 years in many clubs and organizations. These included a Garden Club, Investment Club, Bridge club, PEO, Women's Bowling League and League of Women Voters. She did extensive weekly volunteering at the Red Cross and donated many gallons of blood beginning in World War II. She did much volunteering at Westminster Presbyterian Church, the YWCA and at voting sites during elections. She and a partner formed "Barbara's Sales," and did estate sales in the 1970s. Barbara is survived by her son, Tom W. Barrett of Brooklyn; a brother, Stratton C. Walling of New York, N.Y.; a step-daughter, Donna (Geoff) Anderson of Dunedin, Fla.; a granddaughter, Tonia L. Cooper of Elizabeth, Ill.; and a great- grandson, Shane F. Cooper. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 1, 2005, at the CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3325 E. Washington Ave., where friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until time of service. The Rev. John Helt will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to a charity of the donor's choice. Barbara was active all her life. She is remembered as being someone who always welcomed and paid special attention to newcomers in her activities.
