Linley, Vernona Jane (Hurd)
MIDDLETON
Vernona Jane Linley passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at Wynwood Assisted Living, in Madison. "Nona" was born on December 23, 1921, in Flora Township, Boone City, Ill. (near Belvidere). She was the third of seven children born to Vernon and Rose (Allen) Hurd. When she was two, her family moved to Madison, and she spent the rest of her life in the area. Nona attended Randall Elementary School and Madison West Junior and Senior High Schools, graduating in 1939. She then attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, until the beginning of World War II, when she cut back on her classes to work as an aircraft instrument mechanic, at the Army Air Corps base at Truax Field, and as an inspector of mortar shell fins at Madison Kipp Corporation. After the war, she met William F. Linley, a young veteran recently returned from four years in the Pacific Theatre. A whirlwind courtship culminated in their marriage at Blessed Sacrament Church, on September 7, 1946. Nona and Bill then moved to Middleton, where they eventually built a house on a tract of land on Elmwood Avenue owned by Nona's parents. Three of Nona's siblings soon followed suit, and the row of five houses (the fifth belonging to Nona's parents) gave the siblings' combined 18 offspring the unique opportunity to grow up next door to one another. It was an experience the cousins all appreciated, and as adults, they continue to benefit, sharing a strong bond that was forged in their shared childhood. Nona enjoyed her role as a full time wife and mother, and became active in the community and in her children's activities. She taught catechism, worked with Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, gave piano lessons, gardened, sewed, decorated, redecorated and remodeled. In 1964, with all of her six children still living at home, Nona took the somewhat unusual step (for the time) of returning to UW-Madison, as a part-time student. She graduated, in June 1966, with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, and accepted a position teaching second grade at Waunakee Elementary School, where she taught until her retirement in 1980. A school assignment for one of her own children in the early 1970s, rekindled an interest in family history that Nona had inherited from her mother. That interest grew and broadened, becoming one of the great passions of Nona's life. Over the next 30 years, she devoted herself to recording the history and genealogy of her own family, and that of her husband. Nona compared her search for missing details to the solving of mysteries, and her pursuit of information brought her in contact with many new friends and, then, unknown relatives, across the country and in Europe. She wrote and published eight genealogy books and was nearing the completion of two more, when health concerns led to her decision to pass her files on to younger family members to carry on her work. Along with her fascination with genealogy, Nona enjoyed traveling, spending time with her family, and attending the various events of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was active in a number of groups and committees at St. Bernard Catholic Church, in Middleton, the VFW Auxiliary, the Governor Nelson Dewey Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Society of Mayflower Descendants,

and the Dane County Chapter of Wisconsin Right to Life. Nona is survived by her children, Jane LaFlash, Madison; James A. Linley and his wife, Jenny, Middleton; Mary Statz, Martinsville; Thomas H. Linley, Madison; and Lori Linley Liebetrau and her husband, Mark, Mount Horeb. "Mom—not only were you a wonderful mother, you were a role model; patient, loving and kind. You made the right choices, did the right things, and set a strong example for all of us. Thank you for the love you gave us (and, in turn taught us how to give), the warm and secure home you made for us (and, in turn, taught us how to make for our families) and the lasting legacy you gave us in the genealogies you created. Little, George D. the Rev.
MADISON
The Rev. George Daniel Little "Dan", age 79, died peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at HospiceCare's Don and Marilyn Anderson Center after a 19-month long battle with brain cancer. Dan was born on Dec. 18, 1929, in St. Louis, Mo., the middle son of the Rev. Henry Little and Agathe Daniel Little. With his brothers Henry and David, Dan grew up in Winnetka, Ill., where he graduated from New Trier high school in 1947, followed by his graduation from Princeton University in 1951 with a bachelor's degree in Philosophy. In 1954 Dan received a graduate degree from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago where he received training in urban ministry and also met and married fellow-student Joan McCafferty in 1953. Following seminary and Dan's ordination as a 5th-generation minister in the United Presbyterian Church USA (UPCUSA), Dan and Joan spent two years in London, England, where Dan began his ministry among several dock workers' parishes. In 1956, Dan and Joan moved to Pittsburgh, Pa., where Dan became the organizing pastor of a new inter-city church development, Friendship Community Church. In 1962 Dan assumed a position with the UPCUSA's Board of National Missions in New York City. At that time, he and his family settled in Ridgewood, N.J., for the next 22 years. That same year he was arrested and jailed with other clergy participating in a civil rights march in Albany, Ga. Dan's national service to the UPCUSA culminated with his appointment in 1977 as the Executive Director of the General Assembly Mission Council, the church's highest executive office. Dan returned to parish ministry in 1984, when he was called to serve First Presbyterian Church in Ithaca, N.Y. At the conclusion of nine years in Ithaca, N.Y. Dan served in several significant interim positions as Interim President of McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Ill. and as Pastor-in-Residence at Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, Kan., and at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, Minn. In 1999 Dan and Joan retired to Madison. Dan spent the years before his brain cancer diagnosis in April of 2008, enjoying his children and grandchildren, serving his local Presbytery and the boards of two church-related organizations, working on a family history project, developing his cooking and painting skills and learning to play the piano. Prior to their deaths in 2007, Dan also cared for Joan over many years as she struggled with dementia, and for his brother, Henry throughout his life-long battle with schizophrenia. Dan's appreciation of the richness of life and the diversity of all God's children was palpable. Throughout his life he remained committed to social justice and to the struggle to secure civil rights for all. He also tirelessly sought new ways to think; new ways to discern what is possible and new ways to apprehend, to appreciate and to live into God's truth. Through his relationships, family members, friends, colleagues and parishioners, and through his participation in the arts, he taught those who knew and loved him important lessons about how to live well and how to die well. Dan was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia, in 1993; his parents; his wife, Joan; and his brother, Henry. He is survived by his children, Deborah (Bill) Cohn of Madison, Alice (Jean) Grevet of Verrieres-le-Buisson, France, Daniel (Linda) Anderson-Little of St. Louis, Mo., and Benjamin Little of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Nathaniel and Abigail Cohn, Catherine and Jeremy Grevet, and Daniel, Jacob and Leah Anderson-Little; his brother and sister-in-law, David and Priscilla Little; and a host of extended family members; friends; and loved ones. A memorial service will be held at COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 326 South Segoe Road, Madison, (608) 233-6297, on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at 11 a.m. A light lunch will be served at the church following the service. The family requests memorial gifts in lieu of flowers to McCormick Theological Seminary or to any of the following Madison, WI organizations: Covenant Presbyterian Church, Oakwood Retirement Village, or HospiceCare, Inc.
