I Miss Madison

I just checked my page here and noticed that it's been 5 months since my last post here. I'm a deadbeat blogger. I have my excuses. Most of that time, I was in Ecuador. I spent three glorious months traveling through Ecuador. I also spent 10 days in Colombia. I am still writing about the trip on my other weblog.

Now I'm in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I guess I live here now. Noah (husband) and I just moved here a month ago. He's planning on going to grad school here. I may too in a year or so. (I really don't wanna work.) Albuquerque has its charms I'm told, but it's taking a while to grow on me. I mean, I'm not complaining about the weather. That's for sure. I'm wearing my summer dresses here while y'all are still shoveling snow. And I like all the neon and the low riders and the chiles.

Right now I have a terribly low wage temporary job working for the US Bowling Congress bowling tournament. Lots of Wisconsinites are in town for it and I ask them what they think of New Mexico. Then we make fun of Albuquerque's pathetic attempts to grow grass. Their public parks are like grass graveyards. Sad, sad sights. I miss the lovely, lush greens of Wisconsin. Granted, they're buried in snow right now, but still. Check it out:

Dead Grass

That's what they call grass! The really attractive yards here use rocks and desert plants, but some people insist on using grass that can never flourish. I wonder if they think their crunchy yellow straw-like lawns are pretty.

I have to say though, the things I am missing the most right now are the bars. I haven't found any good dive bars here. There are some good clubs here. The live music scene is awesome. We live within 10 minutes walking distance of two bars that have FREE live music at least five nights a week. Metal, rockabilly, punk, electronic, whatever. I am seeing tons of shows here, which is something I rarely did in Madison. Shows in Madison usually cost at least $5 and I usually didn't feel like risking $5 on bands I knew nothing about. So, I'm thrilled with the music scene. But where the hell are the dive bars? I am yearning for Mickey's and the Wisco. I guess I took for granted that I was in the bar capital of the world.

I'm not sure if I should keep posting here, since I'm not really a Madisonian anymore. Though I still feel like one.
