Emcees Without Voices: Your Local Poynter Practitioner

To the commenter who questioned the journalistic credentials of this here blog, for indecorously calling attention to dubious craigslist postings: I refer you to the Poynter Institute's groundbreaking continuing education text, "Dear Reporters: Be Friends With Craigslist" which will no doubt inspire hordes of "professionals" to follow suit, attempting to wring value from the site that's obliterating their papers' classified revenues:

  • "Newspaper reporters have long been gleaning story ideas from the classified ads in their publications. But the ads are cumbersome on paper. They appear in brain-numbingly small print. Most of them are short, and few have headlines that give readers a quick idea of what the ad is hawking. And, hell, paging through newsprint gets your hands dirty."
  • "Admittedly, this idea does not work everywhere. If you live in the boondocks, it might be a while before craigslist makes it to your town. But if the site continues to grow, as it has over the past 10 years, you won't have to wait long."
  • Madison's Craigslist isn't particularly active--borderline digital boonies--too many kids hung up on facebook and whatnot. Fellow citizens, please remedy that post-haste. These blogs obviously don't just write themselves.
