Castlevania Combat

What usually follows an announcement of a new Castlevania game is my anticipation for the soon-to-be released game. Last week, there was an announcement of a new Castlevania game and I was getting ready to anticipate it but after reading more I was left scratching my head.

Castlevania Judgement is a 3D fighting game for the Nintendo Wii.

I do realize that every Castlevania game released for the Gameboy Advance and the Nintendo DS have been remixes of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, but each one brings just enough elements to make it seem new. I've thoroughly enjoyed these games. The Castlevania team knows how to put together a great 2D game.

What the franchise has failed to do is make a successful jump into 3D. I've played through both of the N64 games and I beat Castlevania: Lament of Innocence. None of these games have captured what makes the 2D games so enjoyable. I also played some of Curse of Darkness, but it was the first Castlevania game I stopped playing and returned because of how terrible it was.

In my mind, I would have thought that someone at Konami would be working on the best way to translate the 2D Castlevania adventure formula to 3D. I never would have guessed that the next 3D Castlevania would be a fighter.

Won't it be considered cheating to play as Dracula because the player has 3 forms to play as before they are defeated? I'm not looking forward to fighting in a clock tower where I will get beat on by my opponent and medusa heads. Are there going to be stairs? I ask because stairs were actually the worst enemy of the early Castlevania games.

I remain skeptical. I'm not exactly sure if my skepticism stems from the game being in 3D or if it is because the game will be a fighter, but neither one sounds like a good idea.
