At One Time This Title Was an Edwin Starr Reference

I want to write about Spore this morning, as it was released this week and it's big and popular and different and popular. Did I mention it's popular? The problem is I don't really know much of anything about it. For the most part, I'm a Spore Ignoramus.

Spore is the brainchild of Will Wright, the creator of The Sims. Many people are excited about Spore simply because it was created by Will Wright and I have no problem with that. I run to anything that is created by Joss Whedon, so I understand the compulsion. However, it's because of Will Wright that I'm not interested in Spore at all. I just didn't like any of his previous games. I didn't have a problem with them, I just didn't dig on them. I only goofed around in SimCity for a little while and I spent about 90 minutes fooling around with The Sims before I got bored and deleted it. Never once did I think that these games were bad, they just didn't hold my attention. They weren't for me. The man makes great games, but I don't want to play them.

As such, I paid almost no attention to Spore, even ignoring the free Creature Creator that dropped on the web a few months ago. It's free, so I should have given it a shot, but I didn't. I know my boundaries and currently Will Wright games are beyond them. That doesn't mean I won't change my mind someday. Up until 5 months ago I didn't play sandbox world games like GTA and now I'm hooked. I didn't get the draw of Japanese RPG games and didn't play my first one until 2000, but now they are by far my favorite genre. There may still be room for some Will Wright love in my heart, just not today.

So, do you have Spore? What do you think about it?
