Game On
While I consider myself more of a hardcore gamer than a casual gamer, that's just a label. The label doesn't define me, but I do define the label. The label is address-label sized, sticky on the back, says what I am in an authoritative, but non-defining way, and has a picture of a panda on it. My labels are both informative and adorable.
As hardcore as I may be, I won't turn my back on a good casual game. I more than got my money's worth from Uno on XBLA, as it's the only game I own that I have claimed every achievement point from. I also enjoy the occasional hand of XBLA's Texas Hold 'Em poker or a round of Spades at games.com. These more casual games aren't how I typically spend my gaming hours, but I do enjoy them from time to time.
This all being said, I do have to admit I was surprised at the huge amount of excitement that I felt after EA's announcement yesterday that several classic board games are coming to a special XBLA channel later this spring. Scrabble, Battleship, Yahtzee, Sorry!, and Connect Four were all games I played a lot and loved as a kid, but haven't played so much recently because I live alone. I am really looking forward to the opportunity to play them on my Xbox 360 on the big TV against real opponents. I may even try Boggle, my personal nemesis that recent birthday girl Amethyst is just too damn good at. Boggle on XBLA just might be how I can practice on my own without being routinely destroyed by her wicked word-finding skills.
