I know the instinct for a lot of people on Valentine's Day is (at 5 p.m. on Feb. 14) to grab an enormous teddy bear, a garishly-colored, helium-filled balloon and 12 roses wrapped in noisy cellophane. And maybe you'll really go crazy and grab a box of Russell Stover. She'll love that, right?
Stop. Right. There.
Every girl likes a big fuss made over her, and lots of presents embroidered and embossed with "I Big Puffy Heart You" and "Schmoopsie Poopsie." And all of this has a good chance of getting you laid, sure. But sometimes, quality wins over quantity. And no, you don't have to drop a week's paycheck at Goodman's.
Get her a candy bar instead. Yup. Vosges Haut-Chocolats has the sexiest candy bars out there, and their chocolate is hot on the trend-o-meter right now. If you want to really get her tastebuds going (not to mention her libido - check out this study), check out their line of $8 chocolate bars. Sensuous, tempting combinations like guajillo and pasilla chiles with Tanzanian bittersweet chocolate and ginger, wasabi, black sesame seeds and dark chocolate will give her a rush, and make you the boyfriend/girlfriend/wife/husband/friend-with-benefits of the year.
Check out Vosges selection here - you can get them in a pinch at most Barriques Markets around town, along with a cheap but tasty bottle of wine to match.
If you plan ahead at least a couple of days, see if you can order a box of Gail Ambrosius' smooth, hand-crafted chocolates, in tongue-tantalizing bursts of flavor like Earl Gray Tea sprinkled with lavendar buds and Venezualan chocolate infused with rose. Gail chooses her chocolates from around the world, for distinct tastes, and all of her chocolates are simply decorated, keeping them cool and sexy. Order on the Web site (no guarantees on stock at this point - you'll have to check with the shop) or visit her new shop at 2086 Atwood Ave.
Giver her with chocolate like this, and you've got yourself a win-win night - easy shopping for you and damn fine chocolate for her makes for smooth-sailing to a hot Valentine's Night.
