~
Growing up, I didn't appreciate oranges taking up precious room in my Christmas stocking. After all, oranges were abundant. You could get them in any grocery store. While we lived in California, I could pick them off the trees. Mom explained the reason behind the oranges every Christmas. I figured this was a tradition that lost its meaning as our world got smaller. Oranges in stockings had represented something unusual and exotic and very, very special. Now that I'm older and have a sense of nostalgia, I've grown to appreciate this tradition. This is the time of year where oranges are imbued with a younger time's simplicity and a deeper appreciation of effort.
