Game On
It was announced just yesterday that Uwe Boll will
no longer be able to make big budget movies. In case you don't
know who Uwe Boll is, he was an independent German movie director
that got a chance to ruin make a movie version of
the video game, "Alone in the Dark". It stunk. However, because of
his knowledge of German movie financing through tax shelters, the
thing made money for the studio.
Armed with this financial knowledge and the belief that gamers will watch any game-based movie, Boll began turning out nothing but video game movies. "BloodRayne", "Postal", "BloodRayne II", etc. These movies, again, were terrible. However, that clever German accounting resulted in the movies making money.
Until last weekend.
Last weekend saw the release of "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale" based on the "Dungeon Siege" series of games. The movie cost $70 million to make and it only pulled in $3 million at the box office. With continued failings at the box office and tax shelters now illegal in Germany, Uwe Boll can no longer make big budget video game movies.
So instead he's going to make low budget video game movies. Next up is "Zombie Massacre", originally an arcade shooter from Sega that may see release on the Nintendo Wii in the future.
Can't we get this guy to stop making video game movies? Or movies in general? He's not very good, no matter what the subject is. Come on, Uwe. It's time to retire.
