What's hot in the summer of '07? Sure, "Superbad" will be big, as will "High School Musical 2," and as well as that "Delilah" song. But many trendspotters are overlooking what may be THE hot trend of the summer -- video footage of weird celebrities in the kitchen.
You may have seen (and if not, see it immediately) the footage on YouTube recently of Christopher Walken enthusiastically preparing a recipe called "chicken with pears" in the kitchen. It's seemingly the most innocuous thing Walken's ever done on film, and yet he brings an edge of Walkenian menace to directions like, "What I usually do is take that flap of skin, I fold it over, I take a toothpick and kind of seal that shut."
Well, add to that word that on the DVD of the new David Lynch movie, "Inland Empire," there's a bonus feature called "David Lynch Cooks Quinoa," in which the iconoclastic oddball director prepares a dish for the camera using the hearty grain. Why?
"Well, you know, there's all these cooking shows," Lynch told Nathan Lee of the Village Voice. "But I don't cook. I know how to make tapioca from when I was little, and rigatoni because I learned how to make rigatoni. But now I know how to make quinoa. So I did kind of a cooking thing."
Does Rachael Ray have to watch her back? (And I mean that literally -- what lengths won't either Lynch or Walken go to get a slot on the Food Network?) And what is it with Hollywood's strangest dudes suddenly getting a yen to strap on the old "Kiss the Cook" apron? Why does it sound strangely familiar?
