Last Friday night was Gallery
Night in Madison.
The twice-yearly event, organized by the
Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, featured a
record 58 venues (including shows with the work of Lone Rock
artist Charles Munch, seen at left, and the annual "Art of Note"
violin art fundraiser for the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras,
seen below right) at the Grace Chosy Gallery, 1825 Monroe).
And this time that total didn't even include such traditional downtown participants as the University of Wisconsin's Chazen Museum of Art, which has an eye-popping show of circus art, and the Fanny Garver Gallery.
A spokesperson for the event also remarked on how many alternative venues - exhibitors besides museums, art gallerys and cafes - were featured this time.
So, here's what Art Talk wants to know?
How successful was last Friday's Gallery Night?
How did you choose which places to go? By geographical area? By artist or media? By name recongition of the venue of artist?
Did Gallery Night get you to attend shows you might not otherwise attend?
Did it get you to purchase art?
Did you see many shows - or any shows - that you recommend to others, or that you intend to visit a second time? Which ones?
Do you think Gallery Night should be continued?
It's a lot of effort to put on. Is it worth it to viewers, to artists and to art sellers and exhibitors?
