FINAL
A pretty dominating effort for the Brewers, who started fast and picked up again in the middle innings. Check captimes.com for more.
TOP 9TH
Torres gets Winn looking to end it for a 13-4 Brewers victory.
BOTTOM 8TH
The Brewers are held without a hit for the first time since the third when Threets sets them down in order.
Derrick Turnbow was up in the Brewers' bullpen, but Torres is back out for the ninth and a possible three-inning save in a 13-4 game.
TOP 8TH
A 1-2-3 inning for Torres, getting Aurilia to strike out looking and Bocock and Holm to fly out.
BOTTOM 7TH
We're getting changes all over the place, as you'd expect late in a 13-4 game. Stephen Holm makes his MLB debut at catcher for the Giants. Joe Dillon hit for Fielder in the seventh, flying out to second.
Weeks hit into a double play after Rivera started the inning with a single. Kapler then added a single before Dillon ended the inning.
Attendance here today is 45,212, the third-largest crowd at Miller Park.
TOP 7TH
Torres gives up a single to Winn and a homer to left by Molina to cut the Brewers' lead to 13-4.
BOTTOM 6TH
This is a rout for sure now. The first five batters reached against Brad Hennessey, who allowed RBI hits to five Brewers in the inning. Kendall and Fielder had RBI doubles, while Kapler, Hall and Hart added run-scoring singles.
Hall's sixth RBI of the game set a career high.
Two changes for the Brewers heading to the seventh: Salomon Torres is on the mound and Mike Rivera is at catcher.
TOP 6TH
The Giants finally get on the board against Villanueva with doubles by Rowand and Castillo and singles by Aurilia and Bocock to make it 8-2. Brian Shouse comes on to strike out pinch hitter Ray Durham and get Daniel Ortmeier, who stays in at left field for Roberts, to line to second.
The Polish won the Sausage Race, if you're interested. And who isn't?
BOTTOM 5TH
Sanchez gives up three singles and a walk to the first four batters of the fifth, ending his outing. Kapler and Fielder had run-scoring hits off the starter before righty Keiichi Yabu came on.
Yabu got Braun to fly to right, but Hall then delivered his second homer of the game, a long, three-run shot to the seats in left for an 8-0 lead.
Hall has five RBIs today, matching his career high, set last season against the Giants.
TOP 5TH
Villanueva has his first 1-2-3 inning of the game, setting down the Giants' top three. He has thrown 88 pitches through five innings.
BOTTOM 4TH
Sanchez sets a career high with his eighth
strikeout when he fans Hardy, his second K of the inning.
Villanueva leaves Hart (single) on first with a pop up to Velez at
second. Still 3-0 Brewers.
TOP 4TH
Villanueva gets into more two-out trouble with back-to-back singles by Aurilia and Bocock (a bunt), but Sanchez strikes out for the second time to end the threat.
Villanueva's six strikeouts matches a career high.
BOTTOM 3RD
Sanchez has settled in. Since Hall's first-inning home run, the Giants pitcher has retired seven of the last eight batters, with Kendall's walk in the middle. His six strikeouts have come against six different Brewers batters; Kapler, Hall and Kendall are the only ones he hasn't struck out.
TOP 3RD
We're mostly full here now, but there's still
a steady stream of people coming across the pedestrian bridge over
Highway 45. Villanueva strikes out the first two batters of the
inning before allowing a Winn single. Molina flies out to end the
inning.
BOTTOM 2ND
With a walk to Kendall in the middle, Sanchez strikes out the side. The lefty has five strikeouts through two innings; his career high is seven.
TOP 2ND
Commissioner Bud Selig is making the rounds through the press box in time to see Castillo to hit a one-out double to left-center. Bocock gets a two-out walk a batter later, but pitcher Sanchez strikes out meekly to end the inning and leave a pair on base.
Villanueva is on 43 pitches through two innings. Sanchez threw 24 pitches in the first.
One more note on Weeks' run streak: It's tied for the NL modern-day record and one off the major league record.
BOTTOM 1ST
Weeks opens the Brewers' half of the first
with a single to left, then steals second with Fielder batting.
Fielder then drives him home with a roller up the middle. After
Braun knocks his own helmet off on a strikeout, Hall launches his
first homer of the season, a shot into the Brewers' bullpen in left
center.
Weeks' run gives him the club record for consecutive games with a
run scored, 17, dating to last season.
TOP 1ST
Villanueva got the first two batters before walking Winn on a 3-2 pitch. But Molina grounded to Hall at third to end the inning.
PREGAME, 1:05 p.m.
The seats are somewhat less than full as the Brewers' starting nine takes the field. We'll see how long it takes to get a little closer to full as the parking lots empty. Of course, with the line to get into the parking lot when I got here at 9:45, it's probably taking a while just to get within a mile of Miller Park today.
PREGAME, 12:58 p.m.
The Brewers are on the field and the national anthem has just been completed by Joseph Attanasio, the Brewers owner's father.
PREGAME, 12:50 p.m.
The Giants have just been announced and we're awaiting the Brewers.
PREGAME, 12:13 p.m.
Greetings from Miller Park, where the roof and the outfield panels are closed for the Brewers' home opener against the San Francisco Giants. Righty Carlos Villanueva gets the start for the Brewers, with lefty Jonathan Sanchez throwing for the Giants.
No surprises in the Milwaukee lineup today. Gabe Kapler is in center field with a lefty starting for the opponent, so the hamstring tightness that forced Tony Gwynn out of Thursday's game in Chicago isn't an issue -- right now. Gwynn said before the game that he's still experiencing tightness not like previous hamstring issues he's had. It doesn't seem likely that he's available to play today, but he wasn't ready to rule it out.
"I'm just really sore, for whatever reason," Gwynn said. "They said there doesn't seem to be any tears. I don't have any holes in my hamstring, so that's good. That's encouraging. From this point, I think it's going to be about me, about how fast I can recover from whatever's going on."
