Musings from Miller Park on a beautiful Sunday afternoon with the roof closed:
It is fitting that Gabe Kapler was born in Hollywood, Calif. How else would you describe his feel good story other than something that was created by a scriptwriter for a TV movie of the week or a big screen drama starring Kevin Costner?
Kapler, who briefly retired for a season to serve as a manager In the Boston organization, is showing that he still has plenty in his tank. The 32-year-old outfielder hit his second home run in two days as Milwaukee blanked San Francisco 7-0 before a crowd of 44,014 at Miller Park. But Ben Sheets stole the show with a complete game shutout, his second career shutout and 14th career complete game. The Brewers' right-hander scattered five hits and struck out eight in notching his first victory of the season.
Kapler, who is batting .467 (7-of-15) this season, started in center field and was 2-for-4 today. He launched a solo homer to lead off the fifth inning. Ryan Braun, who went 3-for-5, followed two batters later and like Kapler hammered his second home run in two days.
The Brewers took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI-double by J.J. Hardy. Kapler drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and Jason Kendall made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. Prince Fielder and Braun cracked back-to-back doubles in the seventh for a 6-0 lead. Sheets has a sterling strikeout-to-walk ratio of 16-2 this season. He has yet to allow an earned run in two starts. Milwaukee earned its first sweep of the season. The Brewers entered the day with a 4-1 record, tied with St. Louis for first place in the National League Central Division.
