What's Brewin': Hit or Miss for May 8

Dennis Semrau  —

Fantasy info heading into the Brewers-Cardinals four-game series at Miller Park.

*** HIT
St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright scattered four hits, walked two and struck out three in seven innings but was saddled with a no-decision against Colorado on Wednesday. The Cardinals' ace takes a 3-1 record and a stellar 2.25 ERA into his next start on Monday in Milwaukee.

*** MISS
Milwaukee ace Ben Sheets is among the league's best pitchers with a 4-0 record and 2.29 ERA. But the remaining four Brewers' starters have a combined 3-12 record and earned run averages that have soared over the 5.00 mark -- Carlos Villanueva (1-4, 6.46); Manny Parra (1-2, 5.86); Jeff Suppan (1-2, 5.22) and Dave Bush (0-4, 6.98).

*** HIT
Double-A Huntsville outfielder Matt LaPorta was named the league's player of the week for the second time this season after batting .526 with three home runs, 10 RBIs and nine runs scored from April 28-May 4. He also won the honor for the week ending April 20. Milwaukee's top draft choice a year ago, LaPorta is batting .330 with 10 doubles, 10 home runs and 36 RBIs. He has an on-base percentage of .423 and a slugging percentage of .696.

*** MISS
Cardinals' closer Jason Isringhausen blew his fourth save of the season Wednesday in Colorado. St. Louis is 22-13 but would be 26-9 if Isringhausen had been perfect in his 15 save attempts this season. However, the Cardinals overall success gives Isringhausen, who is 1-3 with a 6.60 ERA, temporary job security.

*** HIT
Cardinals' outfielder Ryan Ludwick has hit safely in his last seven games. He slammed his fifth home run of the season on Wednesday against Colorado and is batting .356 with 19 RBIs.

*** MISS
Left fielder Ryan Braun has started 33 of Milwaukee's 34 games this season and leads the team in RBI (23) and doubles (11). But Braun ended the Brewers' recent nine-game road trip mired in a slump with only two hits in his last 24 at-bats (.083).
