What's Brewin'?

Adam Mertz, Todd Milewski, Dennis Semrau and Dennis Punzel chime in with news and notes on your favorite baseball team.

What's Brewin': Hit or Miss for May 17

Dennis Semrau  —

*** HIT
Right-hander Dave Bush is scheduled to pitch the second game of today's day-night doubleheader for the Brewers in Boston. He allowed one run in six innings to pick up his first win of the season on Monday. Bush struck out just one batter and walked two in his last start. While his rotation spot is secure for now, he will need to continue to have outings like this if he wants to keep it.

*** MISS
Milwaukee second baseman Rickie Weeks has scored 31 runs and stolen seven bases, both team highs, but he is batting just .187 with a .315 on-base percentage as the Brewers' lead-off hitter this season. His 30 strikeouts in 184 total plate appearances translate into one strikeout every six plate appearances.

*** HIT
Role player Joe Dillon will get the start as the Brewers' designated hitter today in the first game of a day-night doubleheader in Boston. Although Dillon is only batting .250 and doesn't have any home runs or RBI, he has posted at least one hit in all three game in which he has received more than one at-bat.

*** MISS
Milwaukee Brewers lefty Chris Capuano (elbow) underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Thursday, his second such operation since 2002. A former NL All-Star, Cappy will face a tough rehabilitation period that should take at least one year. His future in Milwaukee remains questionable.

*** HIT
The Brewers recalled left-hander Zach Jackson from Triple A Nashville on Friday. He began the season in the Sounds' starting rotation, going 1-3 with an 8.89 ERA in five starts. He was moved to the bullpen and compiled a 2.92 ERA in five appearances to lower his overall ERA to 6.48. He spent all of 2007 in Nashville after making seven starts and one relief appearance for the Brewers in 2006 where he was 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA.

*** MISS
Left-handed reliever Mitch Stetter pitched his way back to Nashville after walking eight of the last 12 batters he faced over three appearances. Stetter, who had been serving as the second lefty out of the bullpen, was 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA in 13 appearances.
