What's Brewin': Brewers look to break out of funk

Dennis Semrau  —

After a 2-6 start to its current 10-game homestand, which includes a two-game losing streak, Milwaukee manager Ned Yost is looking for a lift from somebody, anybody to snap his slumping offense out of its funk. Milwaukee has scored just 20 runs during its home stand and is batting .228 (61-for-267), including .152 (10-for-66) with runs in scoring position.

Here are tonight's lineups in the Brewers second game of their three-game series with Central Division rival Cincinnati.

Brewers
2B Rickie Weeks
SS J.J. Hardy
LF Ryan Braun
1B Prince Fielder
RF Corey Hart
CF Mike Cameron
3B Bill Hall
C Jason Kendall
RHP Jeff Suppan

Reds
CF Corey Patterson
SS Jolbert Cabrera
1B Joey Votto
2B Brandon Phillips
3B Edwin Encarnacion
RF Jay Bruce
LF Wilkin Castillo
C Ryan Hannigan
RHP Ramon Ramirez

Pitching matchup
MILWAUKEE: RHP Jeff Suppan (10-8, 4.56 ERA)
Suppan suffered a 5-2 loss in his last start coming on the heels of 5-0 August. One of Suppan's wins last month came in Cincinnati, when he held the Reds to three runs in seven innings. Suppan had a no-decision against Cincinnati in his only start against the Reds at Miller Park (two earned runs, three hits in 6 2/3 innings on April 19).

CINCINNATI: RHP Ramon Ramirez (0-0, 2.70 ERA)
Ramirez, a rookie, will start in place of Josh Fogg, who exited Thursday's game against Pittsburgh after three innings because of a strained right groin. On Aug. 30 against San Francisco, Ramirez gave up three earned runs and five hits with two walks and six strikeouts in a seven-inning start although he didn't earn a decision.

POINTS TO PONDER
*** With a win tonight, the Brewers (82-62) would match their victory total from all of last season when they finished 83-79.

*** Shortstop J.J. Hardy has hit successfully in 20 of his last 22 games and hit a home run in three of his last six games.

*** Right fielder Corey Hart enters tonight's game ranked second in the National League in doubles with 42. He is looking to become the sixth Brewer to lead the league in doubles. Lyle Overbay was the last with 53 doubles in 2004.

*** Reliever Eric Gagne donated $50,000 to the MACC Fund -- Midwest Athletes against Childhood Cancer -- during a pregame ceremony on Monday. It was the largest single gift from an athlete in the MACC Fund's 32-year history.

*** Catcher Jason Kendall started his 131st game on Monday. He's the only catcher in the Major Leagues to make at least 130 starts in each of the last seven seasons.

*** Suppan was nominated for the Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award, which goes to "a player whose on-field performance and contributions to his community inspire others to higher levels of achievement." Fan voting for the Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award will be conducted on www.MLBPLAYERS.com, the official Web site of Major League Baseball players, through Sunday, Sept. 14.
