Laptop City Hall: This week in the city

Kristin Czubkowski  —

Monday, Sept. 15: Commission on the Environment, 4:45 p.m., Room 108 of the City-County Building, 210 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.

The commission will discuss the county government's resolution to create a diesel idling policy, although I believe Madison already has a vehicle idling policy, as well as the committee's salt use report, which has been to the Council and back with little discussion at least once already.

Plan Commission, 5:30 p.m., Room 201 of the City-County Building, 210 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.

On the agenda is approving a request-for-proposals for plans for a new Central Library, although one plan -- Terrence Wall's condominium structure -- has been heavily discussed already, considering the demolition of the fire-ravaged Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house and altering the U.S. Bank Plaza building to expand the glass structure and make it more environmentally friendly.

Tuesday, Sept. 16: City Council, 6:30 p.m., Room 201 of the City-County Building, 210 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.

The agenda this week isn't too long, but some items of note include thanking Zach Brandon for his service as an alder and appointing his temporary replacement Libby Monson, giving discussion of an ordinance on keeping chickens in two-unit buildings a third try, suspending street vendor licenses during Halloween weekend, an ordinance with a ridiculously long list of referrals that would require light bulbs of a certain energy efficiency in some common areas of some residential buildings, authorizing an architect to submit designs to improve the South Madison Library, a status report on automated trash collection and adopting a report (which is stronger than accepting one) and implementing the recommendations of the Long Range Metro Transit Planning Ad Hoc Committee and the Central Library RFP again.

Maybe I should start using bullet points for Council agendas -- thoughts?

Wednesday, Sept. 17: Alcohol License Review Committee, 5:30 p.m., Room 201 of the City-County Building, 210 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.

Improving the notification system for alcohol licenses is on the agenda again -- in particular, this would include having to post a sign on the premises of an establishment where a license would be held for passersby to see.

Thursday, Sept. 18: Public Meeting on The Natural Step, 8:00 a.m., Room 300 of the Madison Municipal Building, 215 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.

For those interested in sustainability efforts, you can get an update here about what the city of Madison is doing as well as listen to a speaker, architect Doug Farr, talk about "sustainable urbanism" and using Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards in neighborhoods.
