UW men's hockey: Reviewing the review

Todd D. Milewski  —

I just got off the phone with WCHA supervisor of officials Greg Shepherd, and it sounds like what happened Friday night at Magness Arena is a new one for the league.

He said he's never heard of a clock going from 1.0 to 0.0 to 0.9, which appears to be what happened on Matthew Ford's disallowed goal in the Badgers' 3-2 loss.

Referee Randy Schmidt is over at the arena this morning to talk with scoreboard clock technicians, and it also appears the UW coaching staff will be there to show Schmidt what they've pulled from the video.

Shepherd, who said this morning that he was still waiting for the game film to be posted so he could get a look at the play, described Schmidt as being upset because of the timing issues late in the game.

I'm not sure where this is going today. You may have seen Friday that the Atlanta Hawks will have to replay the final part of an NBA game against the Miami Heat because of an upheld appeal. I'm not sure if there is an appeal process in the WCHA, or what would happen, or if it could happen in enough time to make a replay feasible. The Badgers and the Pioneers don't meet again in the regular season this season after tonight's game.
Shepherd said any call on a continuation of the game would have to come from commissioner Bruce McLeod, who is en route to Nashville, Tenn., for the NCAA convention.

Stay tuned. I'll update if I hear more.
