UW men's hockey: Recruit Wiercioch stars in Clark Cup victory

Todd D. Milewski  —

Wisconsin recruits Matt Thurber and Patrick Wiercioch assisted on the overtime goal that gave Omaha the USHL's Clark Cup on Saturday.

Thurber passed to Barry Almeida, who gave Omaha a 4-3 victory in the deciding Game 5 of the series.

Wiercioch put Omaha ahead briefly in the third period with his second playoff goal, and he was the game's third star.

Badgers recruits Brock Montpetit and Craig Smith played for Waterloo.

Wiercioch led all UW recruits with 11 playoff points. Click here for the season stats summary for Wisconsin's 18 committed recruits.

Meanwhile, there are three former UW players in the NHL's Western Conference finals. Chris Chelios, Brian Rafalski and the Detroit Red Wings have a 2-0 series lead over Brad Winchester and the Dallas Stars.

One alum will take part in an AHL Game 7 Monday night, with three more headed for a deciding game Tuesday. Andy Wozniewski and the Toronto Marlies play Syracuse Monday to decide which team heads to the Western Conference finals. Robbie Earl has missed the playoffs with an injury.

Rockford, featuring Jack Skille and Jake Dowell, plays Brian Fahey and the Chicago Wolves on Tuesday at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill.

David Hukalo and the Fort Wayne Komets host the Port Huron Icehawks Monday night for the International Hockey League title.
Alex Leavitt helped the Arizona Sundogs win the Central Hockey League title. His 30 points was one short of the league's playoff record, and the CHL title came two years after he won the ECHL title with the Alaska Aces.
