On Preps: West holds on to Hable Traveling Clipboard

Dennis Semrau  —

Madison West guaranteed west side bragging rights for another year when the Regents defeated Madison Memorial 30-7 Friday night in the 14th annual Burt Hable Traveling Clipboard prep football game at Mansfield Stadium.

Former Madison Memorial football coach Wally Schoessow created the "Burt Hable Traveling Clipboard Award" in 1994 to be presented to the winner of the annual game between Memorial and West. The late Hall of Fame coach spent 40 years coaching football at West before retiring in 1993.

Hable compiled a 199-113-5 record, winning 10 Big Eight Conference titles and a WIAA state championship in 1977. The Regents also finished second at state in 1981.

Madison West junior running back Leighton Settle rushed for 209 yards and two TDs to help the Regents take an 8-6 lead in the series.

"It's a huge deal. The guys take a lot of pride in seeing that in the trophy case all year," said West coach Greg Valaskey, who has led the Regents to a three-game winning streak in the series. "The players know each other so it's about bragging rights, too. As players and coaches, we're proud that the clipboard is staying for another year."
