Wisconsin-based Organic Valley, the nation's largest organic cooperative, has stopped buying milk from a 7,200-head factory dairy farm in Texas as of July 15, according to a release Wednesday from the Cornucopia Institute, a watchdog group for the family scale farming community.
Headquartered in La Farge, Wis., Organic Valley has long emphasized the importance of buying locally produced, organic milk for distribution. But when two smaller organic dairies in Texas ceased operations last year, the cooperative began purchasing milk from the 50,000-acre Natural Prairie Dairy in Delhart, Texas.
The decision angered many of Organic Valley's members who were concerned that the deal would severely compromise the co-op's reputation. In May, co-founder and CEO George Siemon said Organic Valley would stop buying from Natural Prairie on June 1, but that did not happen.
