Farmers Insurance adds pets to auto policies

The Capital Times  —  7/01/2008 9:22 pm

Farmers Insurance Group announced Tuesday that its customers in Wisconsin who carry a collision and comprehensive automobile insurance policy are gaining coverage for their pets if they are injured or killed in a covered collision loss or injured, killed or stolen in a covered auto theft.

The new coverage, which is free, applies to new and existing customers who renew their policies starting Tuesday.

"Our customers asked us to extend coverage to their non-human passengers and Farmers Insurance has responded," Bill Martin, senior vice president Auto Product Management for Farmers, said in a statement. "We estimate more than 63 percent of our customers have pets, and caring for them after an accident can be expensive."

The pet coverage is up to $600 per occurrence, but excludes animals commonly kept for food or profit.
