John Oncken: Custom farmers fill important role

John F. Oncken — 11/13/2008 10:50 am

The normally quiet rural roads of the midwest are abuzz with traffic these days. Grain carts pulled by tractors, huge semitrailers and an occasional combine can mean slow speeds for the commuter who is running late or the in-a-big-hurry salesman or milk hauler. read story

Cross Country: Upright silos still have place on farm

John F. Oncken — 11/06/2008 1:06 pm

A new poured concrete silo towers over Branch View Dairy, a modern family farm in Manitowoc County. Joe and Susan Resch own Branch View Dairy just northeast of Branch -- three miles east of Whitelaw, a mile west of I-43 -- with sons Andy, Greg and Tom and daughter Linda and her husband Brian Engelbrecht. read story

Cross Country: Fix-it men save the day

John Oncken — 10/30/2008 1:22 pm

Agriculture has forever been a business that depends on machines. From the hoe and rake, to the reaper, to steam engines that pulled the equipment, to modern tractors, combines and tillage equipment that does in an hour what grand dad spent a day doing. read story

John F. Oncken — 10/03/2008 9:13 pm

That's when race is on for the close-in seats that the true Holstein experts occupy -- the better to second guess the judge. read story
