Side-by-side solo exhibitions run through July 27 at the James Watrous Gallery, located on the third floor of the Overture Center, 201 State Street.
Bruce Severson's groups his works under the heading "Lake Superior Blues," a collection of acrylics and pastels that often look like photos from a distance of a few feet. Capturing the delicacy and detail in Lake Superior shorelines, Severson's spindly shadows belie the "barrenness" of the northern landscape.
Severson said at the gallery opening on June 20 that he tries to capture the quality of the air, and indeed his wintery scenes (such as "Snow Plain," 2008) may cause shivers.
Amy Arnston's wave watercolors, "The Things We Know," seem meditative. Arnston depicts water with no particular perspective or horizon line, creating nuanced textures in the waves with a wide color palette ranging from Kermit-green and deep purple to a variety of blues and grays.
Arnston works in many media but wrote that currently, "line and wash and watercolor seem most beautiful to my eye." She is interested in exploring the passage of time, stability and change.
