Before we all head off to enjoy fireworks, brats and beer (or in my case -- wine) for the Fourth of July weekend, I'd like to call attention to some of the arts events coming up in the next few days.
First, in case you hadn't noticed, the ever-popular Concerts on the Square patriotic performance has been rescheduled for tonight at 7 p.m. Organizers canceled yesterday because of weather -- perhaps too soon, as the evening was clear, even where I was in Spring Green. (A review of Henry IV is forthcoming!).
The program includes:
Gould:
American Salute
Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18 III. Allegro
scherzando
Arr Wilhousky: Battle Hymn of the Republic
Tchaikovksy: 1812 Overture
Broom Street Theater
This is, I believe, the third weekend for Broom Street Theater's "For What It's Worth," which I hope to review on July 6. Written and directed by Cassi Harris, the show is described this way:
"It's the 1960's. There is a culture clash brewing in the world. And in one church, where a do-good Christian singing group is rehearsing, a radical leftist group breaks into the place of worship with the intention of blowing it up as part of a protest-until they discover the singing teens, and a culture clash begins in Madison, in turn leading to misunderstandings and mayhem."
Broom Street provides a great opportunity for local playwrights to see their work performed. Show times are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, and this play runs through July 27. Join me on Sunday and bring friends -- the Web site mentions a free third ticket if you buy two for a Sunday performance. Check it out: http://www.broomstreet.org/index.html
Mercury Players Presents: Blitz IX
Actors! Mercury is looking for you! Producer Marcy Weiland writes:
"ACTORS WANTED for Blitz IX. All actors welcome to participate in this year's Blitz, on either Friday, July 11, Saturday, July 12, or both. Commitment is from 10 am to roughly 10 pm. No audition necessary but you must sign up in advance, in person. Sign-up: Monday or Tuesday, July 7 or 8, between 7 and 9 pm, Bartell Theatre, 113 E. Mifflin St. Questions: 661-9696 x5."
And that's all she wrote! Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
