The West Beltline near John Nolen Drive was closed for about 45 minutes Monday after a strange accident which apparently started with a piece of furniture falling off a vehicle.
The furniture ended up in the eastbound lanes and a SUV swerved to avoid it only to crash into a van.
The van crashed into the guardrail and the SUV flipped over. Three people in the vehicles were injured, but none seriously, police said.
The accident occurred at 11:48 a.m., police said, and the Beltline was closed so rescue workers and tow trucks could get to the scene. It was reopened at 12:30, police said.
"No one suffered any significant injuries in this accident, but this accident could have been much more serious," Madison Police Officer Howard Payne said.
Payne said it is the responsibility of all drivers carrying items in their vehicles to make sure the items are securely fastened and there is no possibility of cargo falling from the vehicle.
"Taking precautions such as securing your cargo is just one step in decreasing the number of accidents that occur on an annual basis," Payne said.
