Northside crash kills one, injures other

One person was killed and another badly injured at about 5:30 p.m. Friday in a crash at the intersection of U.S. 51 and Hoepker Road on the north end of the City of Madison. 

Authorities still were not releasing names of those involved in the crash as of Sunday morning.

Police blocked off Highway 51 to both northbound and southbound traffic as emergency crews rushed to the scene. Police expected to reopen the road sometime around 8 p.m., Lt. Jerry Tomczak said. 

Witnesses told police it appeared that one car pulled out into traffic from Hoepker Road and was hit broadside by a northbound vehicle on Highway 51.

Tomczak said the woman driver of the westbound vehicle on Hoepker Road, who pulled onto Highway 51, essentially was broadsided by the northbound car and killed in the wreck.

Med Flight was originally called but was canceled when the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the northbound car was taken by Madison Fire Department ambulance to Meriter hospital in Madison with a large head gash. While his condition is unknown, Fire Department spokeswoman Bernadette Galvez said he was conscious when taken from the scene.

Northbound traffic was diverted from Highway 51 at Hanson Road and sent to Portage Road, then west on Hoepker back to Highway 51. Southbound traffic was diverted north of the accident scene to County Highway CV.

A traffic specialist investigator was sent to the scene, Tomczak said. Numerous other law officers and rescue workers were also at the scene, including Madison Police officers, Fire Department personnel and the Dane County Coroner's office personnel.
