The University of Wisconsin-Madison is the 14th best value for in-state students out of 100 of the nation's public colleges and universities, according to business magazine Kiplinger's Personal Finance.

Two other UW campuses made the annual list of the 100 best values in public higher education -- with UW-La Crosse at No. 38 and UW-Eau Claire at No. 65 for in-state students.

For out-of-state students, UW-Madison is ranked No. 15, UW-La Crosse No. 30 and UW-Eau Claire No. 63.

UW-Madison's ranking was the best of Big Ten Conference schools ranked, with Michigan ranked No. 26, Ohio State No. 27, Penn State No. 35, Indiana No. 40, Illinois No. 41, Minnesota No. 45, Iowa No. 52, Michigan State No. 61 and Purdue No. 63.

The 11th Big Ten school, Northwestern, is not on the list because it is a private university. It is No. 17 on the list of best values in private colleges and universities.

The best value in public schools according to Kiplinger's is the University of North Carolina, followed by Florida, Virginia, Georgia, the College of William and Mary, the State University of New York-Geneseo, the State University of New York-Binghamton, the New College of Florida, Maryland, and the University of California-San Diego.

Rankings were based on academic quality, overall cost and financial aid availability.
