If Dane County Clerk Bob Ohlsen's hunch is correct, the first Monday in August is going to be a hectic day at his office. That's the day same-sex couples across the state, including an estimated 1,400 to 2,400 couples living in Dane County, will be able to take advantage of a historic piece of legislation signed Monday by Gov. Jim Doyle that for the first time recognizes domestic partnerships across the state through a registry for same-sex couples. read story

When plans were unveiled in 2004, the $100 million Union Corners project was supposed to revitalize Madison's east side. But the only redevelopment that's actually taken place in the area was the creation of the Malt House at 2609 E. Washington Ave. Now, the Malt House is looking to add three tables and a few chairs so customers can take their drinks outside and perhaps have a smoke. Gov. Jim Doyle on Monday vetoed 81 items worth $10 million out of the two-year $62 billion state budget. Doyle announced the vetoes the same day he signed into law the new budget. It marks the first time since 1977 that a state budget has passed the Legislature and been signed into law before the start of the new fiscal year on July 1. read story
