Some along Rock River urged to evacuate

The Rock County Sheriff's Office has recommended that those who live in low-lying areas along the Rock River evacuate.

Areas where the river is over flood stage include Newville, Indianford and Afton.

Free sandbags and sand are available at the Beloit Town Hall, the Fulton Town Hall, Mallwood Park in the town of Milton, the Rock Town Hall and a barn on Northwest River Road across from the Redwood Motel in the town of Janesville.

Additional information can be found at the Rock county Web site at www.co.rock.wi.us.

The situation is being closely monitored by deputies, and residents affected by flood conditions may contact the Rock County Communications Center at 608-757-2244.

As the flood proceeds, residents can expect road closures, traffic delays, parks and public facility closures and meeting event cancellations.

Residents are urged to stay away from floodwater and not to visit flooded areas. The current of the Rock River is very dangerous, officials warned.

The Sheriff's office also warned that sewage and chemicals may contaminate water and that water may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines.

Residents are also warned to wear rubber gloves and waterproof boots if they are about to come into contact with floodwater. Hands should be washed frequently with warm soapy water if a person comes into contact with floodwater.
