Home foreclosure filings in the Madison area jumped 79 percent from May to June, according to figures released Thursday by data firm RealtyTrac.
There were 177 filings in the Dane/Columbia/Iowa County region in June compared to 99 filings in May and 94 filings last June.
Across Wisconsin, foreclosure filings were up 18 percent from May to June, with 2,363 filings issued in June and 2,008 in May. A year ago, 927 filings were made in June, so the 2008 numbers from June are 155 percent higher than a year ago.
Home foreclosure filings nationally dropped 3 percent from May to June, but still were 53 percent higher than a year ago, according to RealtyTrac.
More than 252,000 foreclosure notices went out nationally in June, one out of every 501 properties in the country.
"We have not yet reached the top of this foreclosure cycle," said James Saccacio, CEO of RealtyTrac, in a press release announcing the new foreclosure filing numbers.
California and Florida had the highest foreclosure filing totals, with the two states accounting for nine of the top 10 metropolitan foreclosure rates.
More than 68,000 foreclosure filings were recorded in California in June, the most in the country for the 18th straight month, RealtyTrac said. Florida had more than 40,000 foreclosure filings in June.
The worst foreclosure filing picture is in Stockton, Calif., where one out of every 72 households got notice of foreclosure.
