Discarded fireworks in a garbage can inside a garage are being blamed for a fire that destroyed a $350,000 home Monday night in the town of Pleasant Springs.

McFarland fire marshal Scott Miller said the cause of the fire was determined after reviewing the fire scene Tuesday morning and through interviews.

The house at 2790 Koshkonong Road was a total loss.

According to county property records, the home is owned by Richard and Jamie Procter.

The two parents and four children inside the house at the time the fire was discovered at 9:45 p.m. Monday night were able to escape to safety after being alerted to the fire by a Dane County sheriff's deputy on his way to work at the southeast precinct station.

The fire started in the garage and quickly spread to engulf the house.

Fire departments from McFarland, Stoughton, Blooming Grove, Cottage Grove, Deerfield and the town of Madison responded to the blaze.
